Publisher's Summary

Mackenzie Allen Phillips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in this midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack one wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change his life forever.

    "Fantastic book"

I loved this book, it was beautifully written in a way that challenges common thought with regard to God. It seems bring about a sort of clarity in understanding God while trying to contextualise Him in a way that bypasses the confusion that can accompany "religion"

"A story of pain, hate, love and laughter. A challenging read."

An interesting take on what a relationship with God could be like.
A story of great heart ache, trials, laughter and immense immense love.
Masterfully narated by Roger Mueller, really brining the characters to life.
    Recommended.

    "Soul Changing"

When my son passed away eight years ago, after some time of grieving it was recommended I read this book as a way to bring me to God and alleviate my grief. I had heard many good things but I was afraid - though I never really understood why. I found my way to God about five years ago and have had many encounters with him in my grieving process. I recently put The Shack on my Audible wish list and after seeing the trailer for the upcoming movie I knew it was time to "read" the book. I have never experienced such a profoundly positive effect from any piece of literature except for maybe the Bible. My eyes, mind, heart and soul are forever changed - I so look forward to continue growing in my relationship with God, Jesus and "Sarayu". Thank you - thoroughly enjoyed!

"NOT a mystery thriller as promoted!"
What disappointed you about The Shack?

It turned into a far fetched Christian fantasy book --- NOT a mystery/thriller at all.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The first couple chapters were good . . .

    "Restoring!"

I didn't know what to expect because I didn't even know the story line. I was looking for a book to listen to for a long drive. This one jumped out at me and yelled 'Read Me'! So, I did. What a wonderful book! You won't be disappointed. This is the first review I have written. Don't normally do. Been a listener for 2 yrs and never written one until now!

"Absolutely phenomenal!!! Wish EVERYONE had a copy!"

This book was hard to stop listening to. I love family and friends and knew the interruptions were necessary however I COULD NOT WAIT to finish listening to it! I sometimes felt like the characters (Trinity) were talking to me. This book was very well written! I am SO THANKFUL that the author shared this with others and was open to rewrites to make it the perfect compilation of everything (short way of saying it). I learned how to forgive and let go a long time ago. The funny thing is that my son who has had a difficult year is the one that read and recommended this book to me. Several times in different chapters I had tears streaming down my face because I knew this opened up a new world of healing to my son. My son had already allowed God to begin working "through" him before he ever picked up this book. This book has left a lasting impression on him that he can now share with his wife and use to teach his 3 young daughters. Thank you for sharing your life with the world Paul!!!

Too preachy. My only enjoyment was thinking of my religious yet racist mother-in-law meeting God in the form of a fat black woman. I hope it works out that way.

    "Preachy, preachy, and preachy"
What disappointed you about The Shack?

If you are looking for a born again preachy novel then this is the book for you. I tried to stick with it but got so bored with the story and the same messages over and over and over again. I give the write kudos for giving a different perspective on God (who would have thought of God as taking on a jolly colored woman's appearance who loves to cook). However, the story dragged and dragged. I felt like I was caught in a never ending bible study course with lots and lots of rationalizations and repetitions.

Would you ever listen to anything by Wm. Paul Young again?

    Nope.

Would you be willing to try another one of Roger Mueller’s performances?

    Yes.

What character would you cut from The Shack?

I would recommend that a top notch editor start from scratch and look at it from the point of "stop saying the same things over and over and over again". Nothing perturbs a reader like being beaten over head with the same message restated in what the writer perceives as clever restatements.

    "Great Book!"
What did you love best about The Shack?

The unusual portrayal of God being both Father and Mother

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Shack?

There were so many but when the Holy Spirit and Mac were in the garden and how the garden with all the beauty amongst the weeds was actually Mac's life! Also when Mac was in the cave judging God.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I did not care for his voice or his lack of emphasis in his voice. Wish it was narrated by Max Mc'Clean

If you could take any character from The Shack out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Jesus! Papa! Sarayu! All are one so them as one

"A story that keeps you interested"
What made the experience of listening to The Shack the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed the narrator. I enjoyed the story. It made me cry one minute and smile the next.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I wouldn't say it kept me in the edge of my seat, but it was a joy to listen to.

What does Roger Mueller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Roger Mueleer is good at bringing the characters to life.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Overcoming sorrow through faith
