Publisher's Summary

Wentworth, Ohio: a small, friendly town where the Carver children bicker over sweets in the E-Z shop and writer Johnny Marinville is the only resident who minds his own business. On Poplar Street, apart from the impending storm, it's just a normal summer's day - with Frisbees flying, lawn mowers humming and barbeques grilling.

As the paperboy makes his round, he is unaware of the chrome-red van idling up the hill....

Soon the residents will be caught up in a game of wills as the regulators arrive in force to face a child whose powers of expression are just awakening.

If you like The Regulators, don't miss Desperation, written as an unidentical pair.

"A good book but terrible performance."

The story is everything you would expect from King and a good companion to Desperation. However the performance is terrible. I kept thinking I was listening to an American commercial. The reader cannot even pronounce Tak correctly opting for Tark. It's a shame he didn't listen to Stephen King reading Desperation as this would have informed him.

    "it was okay."

I read desperation before this and much preferred that. the narration was absolutely fine can't fault that but the story itself just felt forced and asked more questions than it answered.

"Listen to this book but get Desperation first."

Brilliantly narrated by Frank, as always. I'd urge you to listen to Desperation first, the "twin" to this book. Great story, plenty of action, real horror, who could ask for more. 5 stars.

"Desperation on a different level of the tower"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Regulators to be better than the print version?

Frank Muller is an excellent audiobook reader so makes the story come alive a little more than just from reading it yourself.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I don't think I had a particular favourite character due to the way the story flows from character to character without a main focal point. Maybe poor Seth if anyone.

What about Frank Muller’s performance did you like?

Frank Muller was excellent (as usual) backing up his performances of the Dark Tower novels.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really. The story doesn't really push you to read non stop although you do feel you want to know more. More a page turner than a marathon really.

    Any additional comments?

The characters and location are the same as Desperation but they are changed. e.g. Kirsten is a 6 year old girl in Desperation, in The Regulators, she's in her 30s and married.

In Desperation, Tak posesses people, chews them up and moves on to his next victim. In The Regulators, Tak has set up home for the last 2 years in an 8 year old autistic boy called Seth. Seth loves a TV show called MotoKops 2200 and thus Tak loves it too. They also love reruns of Bonanza. Tak unleashes characters and scenery on the unsuspecting town of Desperation to devastating effect.

An interesting idea of writing two novels with related characters and locations but different stories in themselves. I feel it doesn't quite come off as well as Mr King would have liked. Desperation is a better story than The Regulators but that's not to say that either are bad. If you have to choose one, I'd go for Desperation but do try and read both. It's interesting to see how the writing experiment goes.

What disappointed you about The Regulators?

Good idea for a plot but story line was disappointing. Carnage over described, story was disjointed

What will your next listen be?

Something a bit more based in the real world

What three words best describe Frank Muller’s voice?

    Average, average, average.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Just didn't enjoy it.

    Any additional comments?

This story was too much in the same vein as other Stephen King stories, just seemed a bit stale

    "Not one of his best"

Stephen King stories seem to me to work best when there's something credible about them. There's not a lot in this one - well whacky is my summary. The reader Frank Muller is good, but there's just too much incredible in this story for my taste!

Where does The Regulators rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best SK books behind Cell, Duma Key and Under the Dome.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Seth

What does Frank Muller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Not much. He reads it well but others he has read (Talisman) has fallen short but credit where due for this one.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No.....too long and needed to absorb.

    Any additional comments?

Great book. Going to try book I think is linked "Desparation".

    Story
    "Bachman"

It's always sad listening to a Frank Muller book as he was so good at them, and after his fatal accident, there will obviously be no more. However, this was great and linked in with Desperation, as the baddie enters the body of an 8 year old autistic boy called Seth.

The whole story only spans one afternoon, but it doesn't seem like a long, drawn out listen at all. It's fast and intriguing and you dread which members of the neighbourhood are going to make it, each time a new volley of deadly shots flies in.
