Being the skipper of the cutter that carries all supplies and communications between Tasmania and Maria Island is a powerful position - and a deadly one.
Monsarrat and Mrs Mulrooney are sent to Maria Island in January of 1826, the very early days of the penal settlement there, to solve the murder of Harefield - the man who sailed the government cutter between mainland Tasmania and Maria Island, bringing all supplies and correspondence and directives - all of which he made sure to read. Knowledge is currency.
One of Harefield's other responsibilities was to light the primitive lighthouse to keep the whaling boats out to sea safe. During a storm, Harefield was shaken from a ladder whilst igniting the light. He was then attacked with an axe, falling over the cliff edge to his death.
All blame is laid at the feet of Thomas Power, the charismatic Irish revolutionary held in detention - with a lot of privileges - on Maria Island. But did he do it? The outsiders, Monsarrat and Mrs Mulrooney, are brought in to deescalate gossip and surmise.
Power has continued to smuggle his writings out to the British press throughout his internment, and the government does not want him gaining further attention. But did the no-doubt troublemaking, charismatic, educated and charming Power sink to the low of murder to prevent the unscrupulous Harefield from blackmailing him? Or were there others who had reason to want Harefield shut up?

Absolutely had me from moment I knew it existed !
Listened to all 3 in the series and out of sequence cause my main interest is the female factory at parramatta. Loved every single word ....can’t wait for the next book ma I’m sure there is ....more cause the 3 book leaves room for the next tale like the old English writers of old ...Agatha etc ...

Fantastic !
This trilogy has been a wonderful listening journey. l'm sad it's over. Hopefully
there will be more from Thomas and Meg.

Monsarrat and Mrs Mulrooney do it again.
This is the fourth in the Monsarrat series of books by Meg and Tom Keneally, set on Maria Island, Tasmania, and I was thoroughly absorbed in it, as with the other books. The Keneallys give us lively pictures of life in colonial penal colonies, Maria Island being the least-known one so far. The murder victim is the pilot of the ferry going between the island and the 'mainland' of Van Diemen's Land, and this vital nautical aspect of life there is well used and explored. I was a bit disappointed at the end, when we did not hear whether Elizabeth and her convict lover actually made it to America, but the silence leaves us to suppose they did. The unfolding of the story was very well done, to keep us guessing at every turn. Now the duo are back in Parramatta - for another adventure in crime? Paul English's reading is excellent as ever.
