Publisher's Summary

The world’s most beloved detective, Hercule Poirot - the legendary star of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and most recently The Monogram Murders and Closed Casket - returns in a stylish, diabolically clever mystery set in 1930s London.

Returning home after lunch one day, Hercule Poirot finds an angry woman waiting outside his front door. She demands to know why Poirot has sent her a letter accusing her of the murder of Barnabas Pandy, a man she has neither heard of nor ever met.

Poirot has also never heard of a Barnabas Pandy and has accused nobody of murder. Shaken, he goes inside, only to find that he has a visitor waiting for him - a man who also claims also to have received a letter from Poirot that morning, accusing him of the murder of Barnabas Pandy....

Poirot wonders how many more letters of this sort have been sent in his name. Who sent them, and why? More importantly, who is Barnabas Pandy, is he dead, and, if so, was he murdered? And can Poirot find out the answers without putting more lives in danger?

"What Sophie and Agatha have in common is a rare talent for fiendish unpredictability. They make you see how the impossible might be possible after all." (Sunday Telegraph)

Most awful book

As someone who loves Agatha Christie’s books this was a horrible reimagining of her famous character. There were far too many superfluous characters who served no purpose, the climax was sadly wanting and the book went nowhere. Completely disappointing all round.

Disappointing

Being a big fan of Agatha Christie’s Poirot I was sadly disappointed by this book. The story seemed to have too many sub plots and kept going off track giving us information about characters that we really didn’t need to know. It became slow and tedious and took far too long to get to the conclusion which was an anti climax, and I n the end I didn’t really care about any of the characters. Poirot’s character was too much of a deviation from the original and he became annoying. I think if a writer is going to use such a famous character in a book then they should stick to the original characteristics. The narrator did the best he could considering the clumsy over written text he had to deal with. The French accent became a bit much towards the end however.

Enjoyable

I thought this was an enjoyable mystery which kept me guessing. Sophie Hannah does a good job of rendering Poirot and his idiosyncrasies. I liked the narrator, who created a believable for each character . Yes, it took a while to get there, but so did Christie sometimes!

Weak Plot

I wanted to like this book but found that as the story progressed the plot was weak and by the end of the book I was proven right.
I have read Sophie Hannah before and enjoyed her writing but this one was disappointing.

it was ok but too long and drawn out

there is a reason that Agatha Christy sold so well. This was not in that realm.

Oh I do miss Christie

Not a bad story. It’s a big long winded and I almost had to opt out but in the end I stayed to the end. The narrator was great but his Poiret isn’t all that hot. Trouble is I’ve seen all the tv series and the Belgium accent is perfect. This story is ok.

Yes!

Loved it .. truly in the Christie style. An enjoyable Cosy Crime. Hopefully there will be yet more to come in the not too distant future.
