Publisher's Summary

Salander is plotting her revenge - against the man who tried to kill her, and against the government institutions that very nearly destroyed her life. But it is not going to be a straightforward campaign. After taking a bullet to the head, Salander is under close supervision in Intensive Care, and is set to face trial for three murders and one attempted murder on her eventual release.

With the help of journalist Mikael Blomkvist and his researchers at Millennium magazine, Salander must not only prove her innocence, but identify and denounce the corrupt politicians that have allowed the vulnerable to become victims of abuse and violence. Once a victim herself, Salander is now ready to fight back.

Critic Reviews

"With the spiky and sassy Lisbeth Salander - punkish wild child, traumatised survivor of the 'care' system, sexual adventurer and computer hacker of genius - Larsson created the most original heroine to emerge in crime fiction for many years." (The Independent)

"Complex, satisfying, clever, moral...a grown-up novel for grown-up readers...this is why the Millennium Trilogy is rightly a publishing phenomenon all over the world." (Kate Mosse)

Women have strong roles

Great to read a book where the main characters are human and not idealised and where main women have strong roles.
Amazing that Lisbeth is relatively inactive for half the novel but still as lovable as ever.

A bit long

Story line was awesome but the book dragged on with too much detail in some parts.

Apart from some excruciating court room scenes, great

The story bubbles along, maintaining interest all the way to the court room scenes. The court proceedings were difficult to take, although perhaps they are an accurate reflection of the Swedish system. Too much assertion and not enough evidence. A good ending to the trilogy.

Fine ending but too many inaccuracies

This is an important book to read to finish the trilogy, and the conclusion ties up most loose ends fairly well. I am a psychiatrist in training, and have done terms in forensic psychiatry and watched plenty of court cases. These are my main issues:

There is no court in the world that would be allowed to run like this. Being able to interview multiple witnesses at once; checking statements made on cross examination with the defendant on the spot; the judge interviewing the defendant while another witness is on the stand; multiple statements during cross that would be better in opening or closing arguments and would be objected to; surprise evidence; unrealistic timeframe. These issues make it hard to suspend disbelief unfortunately.

I have no qualms in the notion of the story portraying a villainous psychiatrist. History will attest to countless maleficent charlatans who call themselves shrinks. Some things were accurate, but more so in the cross examination. He is a terrible psychiatrist. I don’t mean just evil, but also not very good at psychiatry. Diagnostically she is more likely to meet autistic spectrum disorder and cluster b personality disorder traits with complex trauma, but definitely not paranoid schizophrenia. He doesn’t describe any significant psychiatric phenomenology to bolster his claims. He is more of a representation of the classic 1930s psychiatrist who was likely heavily psychoanalytically trained and didn’t have any standardised criteria of mental disorders. People like this particular psychiatrist probably exist today (they would be rare to come across) but it would be so hard to stay in work acting like that. You’d be struck off pretty quickly! Sounds like that’s likely for him anyway…

Overall great trilogy though!

Outstanding

Gripping from start to end, without any drop-off between books 1 and 3. Riveting.
