About this listen

In this gripping thriller, an ex-agent on the run from her former employers must take one more case to clear her name and save her life.

She used to work for the US government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning.

Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

When her former handler offers her a way out, she realises it's her only chance to erase the giant target on her back. But it means taking one last job for her ex-employers. To her horror, the information she acquires only makes her situation more dangerous.

Resolving to meet the threat head-on, she prepares for the toughest fight of her life but finds herself falling for a man who can only complicate her likelihood of survival. As she sees her choices being rapidly whittled down, she must apply her unique talents in ways she never dreamed of.

In this tautly plotted novel, Meyer creates a fierce and fascinating new heroine with a very specialised skill set. And she shows once again why she's one of the world's best-selling authors.

I think that Stephenie’s post Twilight books have shown her full range as an author. The characters in this book and their strange relationships with each other are both strong and crucial to a satisfying conclusion. Even the short lived characters elicit an emotional response from the reader/listener.
Both the urban and rural settings are described in such detail that you can easily visualise them. The action sequences are also easy to become part of.
The narration enabled the listener to easily discern one character from another. The pace changes depending on the situation and builds tension where needed.

I have been a fan of Stephenie Meyers books for a decade. I’ve had The Chemist in my audiobook list for at least a year & danced around it, mainly because of its length. Well I can say, I wish I had got right to it way back then.
It’s brilliant, well written, with lots of descriptive detail that lets you “see” the story.
The ending was a surprise.

Brilliant!

I loved this book. I bought it for driving in the car, and couldn't put it down (or turn it off) until finished.

Couldn't put it downer!!!

The story started out slow, almost boring in the first few chapters. However things pick up soon after Daniel and Kevin came into picture. Towards the end I was just rooting for team Alex. Formidable heroine but what a great character!

Did not expect to enjoy it so much!
