It is not often that I find myself not having the slightest idea where a detective story is heading. Rachel Abbott had me guessing and I was not guessing correctly for at least the first half of the book. Indeed a great read.

    "Too Long."

A decent, simple story that could have been gripping, but was dragged out far too long. Not at all worth the hype. Disappointing.

    "decent enough"
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I liked the attempt at the Northern accent but feel that it would have been better to just have a Mancunian narrate. The male narrator was not the best at doing female voices but overall both narrators were easy to listen to.

    Any additional comments?

This is a decent story, worth the money but I wouldn't rate as brilliant. The author was good at making you think hard about the clues in some areas but not so much in other areas.
I didn't like the subplot/side stories like the love angle or the detectives break in because it didn't go anywhere - I mean literally didn't go anywhere at all.
Overall though if your into this genre and want something easy and a bit cheaper than other audible' s it shouldn't disappoint

"Gripping story - well paced & excellent narration"
Where does Sleep Tight rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Very close to the top - I found it hard to stop listening.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I really like Tom - he's not hard to like - he seems to have an instinct for when the evidence is not what it seems.

Have you listened to any of Melody Grove and Andrew Wincott ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No I don't think I have - the narration was very good - as an avid Audible listener I really appreciate good narration - it can really make the experience for the listener.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes it definitely was.

    Any additional comments?

This is the second book I have listened to by Rachel Abbott - really enjoyed The Back Road but this is even better.

    Story
    "Imaginative story"

The book starts with a chapter the significance of which only becomes obvious towards the end of the book. The main story then starts as the police are called by Robert to report that his wife, Olivia, has apparently disappeared with their three children, shortly before he returned from attending a conference.

The narrative switches around following the thoughts and actions of Robert, Olivia and the detectives. It emerges that Olivia is deeply unhappy as her highly manipulative husband, in the pretence of being ultra caring, monitors her every move and systematically circumscribes her life by excluding friends and family. We learn that Robert captured her affections at a time when she was grieving the death of her parents and the disappearance of a much-loved partner and father of her daughter.

There are many twists in the story, particularly towards the end and the denouement is surprising. I listen and read many detective stories and this book is no exception in following what seems the inevitable template for this genre: the main detective is divorced or a widower, a bit of a maverick and his boss (now usually a woman) is hard on him; the crime(s) are far from run-of-the mill; and the story reaches a crescendo as the hero/heroine is in severe jeopardy, often owing to a rash or stupid decision. All these conventions are here, but nevertheless I was gripped by this imaginative and well-crafted novel and kept listening to find out what happened next.

Some have criticised the narrators but I thought they were very good.

    "Okay"

This book was spoilt for me by the narration. In particular the male's accent and inflection grated so much so that I almost returned it.would also have been better if the female narrator played all the female parts and visa versa. Nevertheless, overall the story was very good and an enjoyable listen.
