Story
Bird is a woman on the run. One minute, she's in a meeting in her office in Birmingham - the next, she's walking out on her job, her home, her life. It's a day she thought might come, and one she's prepared for - but nothing could prepare her for what will happen next. As she flees north using multiple disguises, Bird has to work out who exactly is on her trail, and who - if anyone - she can trust. Like many people, she has fantasised about escape for a long time, but now it's actually happening. Is her greatest fear that she will be hunted down, or that she will never be found?

Story
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Incredible!
A deal of the day buy to try and get over the last book hangover I had just finished, but this book has given me an even bigger hangover!
This story in incredible and among the best I have ever read (listened). The main narrator brings the character of Delia alive, so much so I actually believed I knew her. I couldn't help but have respect for Delia and not a grudging one at that. I have read many reviews about this book an I cant agree with the overriding hostile opinion of Delia. For me she is someone to pity, because despite what she is, she just is. The ending was pure poetry
I will immediately buy another book by this author.

What psychological damage can do.
A disturbing but intrigueing tale of what happens when one is damaged as a child, and its rippling-out affect impacting so many others over the years. The consequences of psych damage when seen as mere "evil". Very listenable ... and angsty. Disturbing ending!

Not what I was expecting
I thought this was a thriller. Its not. It is a compelling story that is hard to stop listening to. However it is also a deeply disturbing, depressing story. The writing style is so good I did finish the book however it was a struggle due to the content. A heartless, hideous main character... lots of sad characters actually. The main narrator did an amazing job.

Some twists and turns
It is different to hear a story where the main protagonist is totally unlikable. I really enjoyed that difference. It was an easy listen. All round a good story.

Fantastic dark monster of a book
If you like your escapism on the darker side. This is an amazing tale of a woman, damaged as, who taints all she touches still being charismatic and enigmatic.
Skin Deep is a magnificent dark monster of a book.
Be prepared to wallow in the deliciously sinister, I nearly stopped halfway but am so glad I didn't. This book is a very well-written psychological thriller with unexpected twists. There is killing at the start which is not revealed until the end and you'll never pick it.
Delia is a beautiful woman, beauty and ugliness are central to this story. She is from a small island off the west of Ireland, her lack of empathy for others helps her to survive tragedy and simultaneously contributes to her downfall.
I hear you ... I'm just a masochist - sounds like an Irish House of Mirth? I could not stop, the narration is great with no less than 6 other short-bit-part narrators.
A brilliant listen that will make your skin crawl.

Not a bad book
Not a bad book, took some getting used to in the start due to the chopping and changing of timelines; however, overall I enjoyed the book. Not quite my cup of tea being the genre was outside of my normal.
