Publisher's Summary

From the Sunday Times number one best-selling author comes the thrilling second instalment in the Crimson Lake series.

In a dark roadside hovel called the Barking Fog Inn, the bodies of two young bartenders lie on a beer-sodden floor. Only the nighttime animals in the surrounding forest were close enough to hear their screams.

Crimson Lake's resident private detectives are hired to take on the case. Disgraced former police detective Ted Conkaffey and convicted murderer Amanda Pharrell are uneasy allies working alongside DI Pip Sweeney on her first homicide investigation.

For Ted, a new case serves as a welcome distraction from his fight to clear his name over the abduction of a teenage girl. For all three, the hunt for the truth will draw them into a violent dance with evil. Redemption is certainly on the cards - but it may well cost them their lives....

Beautiful narration, great characters

I think I could listen to Lani Tupu read a telephone directory! Great, complex characters - Amanda a grown-up version of Pippi Longstocking.

Such great and full of depth characters.

What an incredible writer. I’ll be thinking about the characters for a long time after the book.

Great Stories

I really enjoyed both books . I'm annoyed that the ABC's tv adaption of Troppo has an American in the role of Ted. Why? 😡

Gripping.

The story had everything working for it. Tension plot, etc, spoiled by the atrocious narration.

Redemption Point

On the plus side, Fox uses Americanisms rarely, during her 2nd Crimson Lake book. And overall the language seems more natural.

However it’s a repetitive read, continuously rehashing the previous installation of the “Crimson Lake “ Series.

But once you have waded through all the “previously on” material, you are left with a short novella, in which a couple of plot lines interconnect.

Not much more than a rainy day read. A shame, really… as one of the protagonists, Amanda Pharrell, is such an interesting character. She’s under-utilised, yet could have been an absolute standout. She’s well-written, quite well developed as a character, with unique idiosyncrasies, not usually seen in this type of book.
There was definitely more of a tale for her.
The wily Forensic Pathologist, Dr Val, is also a strong female character. Witty, and compassionate. She deserved more attention.
My last critique is a

TRIGGER WARNING LGBTQIA
➡️This is extremely frustrating! We once again have a cis/het writer, writing a “kill your gays” Trope plot line!
Why???????!!!!!!!!
DI Pip Sweeney was hard working, complex, complicated, and enjoyed working with, and problem solving with Amanda. What a fascinating relationship to explore … Record Scratch! NOPE! It seemed a really lazy way to end this story line.
