Publisher's Summary

An archaeologist studying on a site at Whalsay discovers a set of human remains. Is it an ancient find - or a more contemporary mystery? Then an elderly woman is shot in a tragic accident.

Shetland detective Jimmy Perez is called in by her grandson - his own colleague, Sandy Wilson. Mima Wilson was a recluse. She had her land, her pride and her family. As Jimmy looks to the islanders for answers, he finds instead two families whose feud has lasted generations. Surrounded by people he doesn't know, Jimmy finds himself out of his depth.

Then there's another death and Jimmy must dig up old secrets to stop a new killer from striking again...

    "Enjoying Ann Cleeves"

I have only just discovered Ann Cleeves and am enjoying her books immensely. The storyline sucks you in nicely and I was sorry to come to the end of the book because I felt like I belonged with the characters

    "Really Engaging Village Mystery"
    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this story - I've read or listened to all of Ann Cleeves' Vera Stonhope mysteries, and loved every one. This was my first Jimmy Perez mystery, and I found it as well written, and well told, but softer somehow. Softer, by the way, is good.

I was really in the mood for something nice. While this isn't really a cozy mystery, it has excellent characterization, sees Perez's young deputy grow up a bit, and really does a good job of portraying the folks in an island village.

Oh - also a good little mystery!

    "Not appreciated enough"

Like Cynthia Harrod-Eagles, Ann Cleeves is not publicised enough in North America. She has a wonderful sense of place, especially in The Shetland Quartet, and her writing is excellent. She creates wonderful characters and plots. I would like to see many more of her books available on Audible.com. The narrator of this series isn't my favourite and doesn't give a Scottish flavour to the dialogue, but is adequate and has a British accent. The quality of her books deserves the best narrators but shows through any flaws in that area.

    Story
    "A simple start to mayhem!"
Would you listen to Red Bones again? Why?

I will be listening to the story again. We were kept guessing right up until the final moments to see who was the culprit!

What did you like best about this story?

The scenery, vividly painted, of the places where the action took place.
The range of interesting characters together with their motives and prejudges.

What does Gordon Griffin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The reader, Gordon Griffin adds colour and humour to every character with effortless ease.
He keeps it going at a comfortable pace and switches between them without missing a beat

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

be very careful aboout what you wish for!

    Any additional comments?

We are now looking at more of the Shetland series for more vicarious experiences on that island group.

    "Good story"

I enjoyed the story of this book, but found the narrators voice incredibly irritating. No hint of a Shetland accent to be found. If like me you want to hear the story in the accent of the area it's written in, then I'd give this a miss.

A bit far fetched but you still fall in love with the Islands and want to meet Jimmy Perez and marry him. Enjoyed it.

    Story
"Another Great book in the Shetland Island series"

This one is set on the island of Whalsay and follows several generations of two families and the tensions between them. The Clewsons are a rich fishing family, who have an extended bungalow and a big "house". Living nearby them in Lindby are the Wilsons who live in two crofts: Setter and Utra.
The story is triggered by a couple of university archaeology students who believe they have found something of historical significance in the grounds of Setter.
Lots of inter-relationships to keep track of as the story unfolds.
    Great performance by Gordon Griffin.

    "Gripped!"

I am a huge fan of the Peter May Lewis trilogy, and wanted something along those lines. Although it is not quite there with the beautiful descriptions that May does, I cannot fault it for narration, character development etc. straight off to download the next one!
