Publisher's Summary

Do you need my help?
It was always the first question he asked.
They called him when they had nowhere else to turn.

Raised and trained as part of a top-secret programme, he was sent to the worst places in the world to do things his government denied any knowledge of.

Then he broke with the programme and disappeared. But now someone's on his tail. Someone who knows he was once known simply as Orphan X.

Cheesy 80s action flick turned into a book

even has a cutesy single mom with an adorable kid! it's ridiculous but if 80s action flicks is your thing, it's not half bad.

misogynistic and trashy

The author's misogyny is both tedious and a bit offensive. The story is ok, but awful, hackneued wtiting Also one of the weaker narrations I've listened to.

I didnt want to stop listening

Looking for a series to 'really get stuck into' I found this Gregg Hurwitz novel, number 1 in the series. Evan Smoak has some similarities with Jack Reacher.. he helps people who are in trouble.. but Evan lives in a fortress and has loads of 'things', whereas Jack doesn't. Within a couple of chapters I was interested in his life and his routines.. he's a lonely kind of guy, meditates and lives by strong codes. Anyway, I finished the book within three days and can recommend it as a fast moving story that clearly has loads of places to go. Book 2 is now on my list.

The reader, Scott Brick, has really improved lately. He used to drone on and on with not much variation in his voice and as a non-American, I will often choose a book because it doesn't have an American reader. ( Apart from the fabulous George Guidall of course. ). However, in Orphan X Brick's reading is very good.

Utterly Astounding

Fantastic reader, nails all the beats and voices.

The story itself is fantastic, taking a very real approach to espionage and human behaviour

Great story. Not so great narration.

The story is great. I really struggled with the narrator though. He seemed to dramafy everything. Long pauses and just too much ergency and mrnace in his voice. It let the book down.

Wonderful narration & really interesting story line. Edge of the seat stuff throughout,
Highly recommended for listeners who enjoy action & revenge story’s.

Doesn't live up to expectations

Consider reading the book instead. It might me better. The selected reader sounds old and dorky. It's a contrast to the character.
