Critic Reviews

"The elegance of this book is that its axis is a resounding 'perhaps'... It is this moral ambivalence that draws readers to the true crime genre, and Safran nails it!" ( Weekend Australian)
"Mississippi is like a trampoline for [Safran's] eccentricities. But the form and content of the story bring out an unfamiliar side of him." ( Sydney Morning Herald)
"A winning combination of memoir, true crime and gonzo journalism...a compulsive summer read." ( Sunday Mail)
"Funny and gripping and wonderfully weird.... It's a tremendous book. I can't praise it too highly." (Louis Theroux)
"Witty, insightful, compelling - In Cold Blood for our generation." (Eddie Perfect)
"[Safran] has written a marvellous book which I cannot put down." ( Melbourne Observer)
"Now I know what to recommend people who liked Them." (Jon Ronson, author of The Men Who Stare at Goats and The Psychopath Test)

A bit of a slog at times

Love the author but this was tough to stick to at times. Kind of felt like this was the notes from which to write the book, not the book itself.

pretty good

i wonder a bit about the ethics of how involved he got, a few things i'm hoping are just creative license.

Nice book.

Loved it! Instantly compelling, with the first caper brimming with edge-of-your-seat suspense. The story telling is charming. Highly recommended if you miss the John Safran and Father Bob radio show. I crocheted my dog a nice vest to this book.

Not great

I love John Safran but this story was hardly worthy of writing a book about. Safran poorly attempts to fit the evidence to his narrative.

Soundbites

A book written and recited by a person who has little aptitude in either ..
No doubt a good documentary producer the authors' style is akin to a soundbite quoter on early bird news..

Tops

Safran's nasal lisp adds an extra layer of awkwardness to this moving , thought provoking , excruciatingly honest & hilarious story.

Honest

While I love John Safran’s wit and clever delivery, I value even more his honesty and willingness to reveal both his and his subjects’ humanity, in all its strange and wild diversity, complexity, tenderness and brutality. Thank you, John Safran, for another excellent book.

Great tale by a great author (I am biased)

Since race around the world, I have been a fan of all of Safran's content. This book just highlights his raw nature, certainly self centered view point alongside his ability to build relationships with pretty much everyone.

Truth is stranger than fiction

I really don't know how I feel about this book. I love John and it's definitely an interesting case but also very dark and depressing and confusing and just leaves you thinking - WTAF?

But I guess that's the nature of the case and the people involved. Truth is always stranger than fiction.

A meserisng true story

This story had highs and lows and it felt like I was taking the journey to Mississippi with Safran. A painful story told with compassion.
