Story
When a body is hauled from the River Tyne, Sarah Tucker heads to Newcastle for a closer look. She identifies the dead woman as Private Detective Zoë Boehm, but putting a name to the corpse only raises further questions. Did Zoë kill herself, or did one of her old cases come back to haunt her? Coincidence is an excuse that soon appears pretty unconvincing. Sarah can’t leave until she’s found the answers to her questions, however dangerous they might turn out to be.

Publisher's Summary
London rules might not be written down, but everyone knows rule one. Cover your arse. Regent's Park's First Desk, Claude Whelan, is learning this the hard way. Tasked with protecting a beleaguered prime minister, he's facing attack from all directions himself: from the showboating MP who orchestrated the Brexit vote and now has his sights set on Number 10; from the showboat's wife, a tabloid columnist, who's crucifying Whelan in print; from the PM's favourite Muslim, who's about to be elected mayor of the West Midlands, despite the dark secret he's hiding; and especially from his own deputy, Lady Di Taverner, who's alert for Claude's every stumble.
Meanwhile, the country's being rocked by an apparently random string of terror attacks, and someone's trying to kill Roddy Hoover at Slough House. The crew are struggling with personal problems: repressed grief, various addictions, retail paralysis and the nagging suspicion that their newest colleague is a psychopath. But collectively they're about to rediscover their greatest strength - that of making a bad situation much, much worse.
It's a good job Jackson Lamb knows the rules. Because those things aren't going to break themselves.
Critic Reviews
"The UK's new spy master." (Sunday Times)
"Herron is spy fiction's great humorist, mixing absurd situations with sparklingly funny dialogue and elegant, witty prose." (The Times)
"Herron draws his readers so fully into the world of Slough House that the incautious might find themselves slipping between the pages and transformed from reader to spook." (Irish Times)

Imagery and quips have been mastered
Mick has not let me down with this book, Lambs quips send me into chuckles eg calling a slow horse a dick head or do
I mean egghead lol.the descriptive poem-like prose especially at the end of the book is so evocative (dusk) I’m getting sad now as I’m moving too quickly through the series

A good listen
This is a good story with the old favourites from Slough house. Sean Barrett is a perfect narrator as always. I was disappointed that Mick Heron thought he should add his disgruntled thoughts of a certain famous, well thought of President that is pointless to add to or enhance the story.

Another brilliant Mick Herron and Sean Bartlett collab
I’m addicted to Mick Herron’s books. They are the best modern spy novels, especially when performed by the masterful Sean Bartlett.

A new favourite
Both the author and the narrator make this series a Favourite. Great plots, great characters, and the narration is excellent.

Another great addition to Slow Horse family
As always enthralling story with more twists and turns then a twisty turney thing. Jackson and co deliver yet again. Narration is just wonderful, don’t leave this one behind.

beautifully written
every character has depth and some are very very funny. polecat correctness has been left behind and in its place is wit and humour

symbiotic relationship between author and narrator
This is the fifth book in the series that I have read and it has occurred to me that Sean Barrett is a vital part of the author’s process. Playwrights often write parts for particular actors and these books are no different. Rather than being type on a page, they are more like radio plays. I believe Mick Herron subtly acknowledges this with the introduction of a peripheral character named Barrett who ‘has a mellifluous voice’.
