The Master story teller strikes again.

Publisher's Summary
From the globally best-selling author of Cast Iron, Coffin Road and The Blackhouse, an explosive new thriller set in the Outer Hebrides.
Husband and wife Niamh and Ruairidh Macfarlane co-own Ranish Tweed: a Hebridean company that weaves its own special variety of Harris cloth, which has become a sought-after brand in the world of high fashion. But when Niamh learns of Ruairidh's affair with Russian designer Irina Vetrov, then witnesses the pair killed by a car bomb in Paris, her life is left in ruins.
Along with her husband's remains, she returns home to the Isle of Lewis bereft. The Paris police have ruled out terrorism and ruled in murder - making Niamh the prime suspect, along with Irina's missing husband, Georgy. And so French Detective Sylvie Braque is sent to the island to look into Niamh's past, unaware of the dangers that await her.
As Braque digs deeper into the couple's history, Niamh herself replays her life with Ruiairidh, searching her memory for those whose grievances might have led to murder. And with each layer revealed and every unexpected twist uncovered, the two women find themselves drawn inexorably closer to a killer who will not turn back.

Peter May at his Best
If you loved the Lewis Trilogy this beautiful story will not disappoint. It is difficult to describe the beauty of May’s writing. His words are so evocative that you can almost taste and smell the islands, and you can certainly feel the grief that Niamh is experiencing and the descriptions of the landscape, weather, characters, buildings - everything is just faultless. Flashbacks to the characters as they grew up gave a perfect background to the story and their stories were so warmly told that you almost felt you had grown up with them. Perhaps I am biased but I do think Peter May is a master of his craft and ‘I’ll Keep You Safe’ for me is definitely on par with The Lewis Trilogy. An absolute treat to hear, the narrators are brilliant. I just got lost in it.

He’s written far better
Unfortunately this was a disappointing story although written beautifully. The storyline was weak and didn’t progress very far. It was more a set of reminiscences. The protagonist was unlikeable as a character and the conclusion far fetched and unsatisfying. Peter May has written some beauties - this is not one of them

Has Peter May lost his mojo?
I absolutely loved the first three Lewis & Harris island books by Peter May, so much so I have listened to each of them twice over. So I was primed to really enjoy I'll Keep You Safe. What a disappointent. Tedious, predictable, and at times cringeworthy (male authors should really not attempt to write about teenage romance from the point of view of the female character). At one point, the female protagonist is attacked and nearly killed, but does she report this to the police, who are already investigating her husband's murder. Does she bollocks! She just returns to her isolated home, alone, and goes to bed. And as for the denouement . . . well, that was just totally unbelievable.
This very boring story was not helped by either of the narrators, both of whom plodded along in stolid but unimaginative style. Maybe they were bored too.

Too far fetched
As per usual, a beautifully written story. However, a completely improbable and nonsensical ending spoilt the book. Most unlike Peter May. Shame.

Shared narration spoilt it for me.
I have loved all Peter Mays writing up till this book, but this one was an improbable plot with some unlikeable characters, but most of all, to stray from a full narration by Peter Forbes, to a shared narration with Ann Murray, in my opinion was a huge blunder. Her performance was stilted and wooden. Peter Forbes breathes life into all characters, both male or female superbly, and for me is simply impossible to match. Quite liked the nod to Lee Alexander McQueen's Highland Rape showcase in the story and as usual Peter May has captured the true essence of the Lewis and Harris landscape . I remain a huge fan and will listen and relisten to all the other Peter May books.

Another great read
I enjoyed this Peter May book. The story kept my interest all the way through. A little disappointed with the ending but not so much that I wouldn’t recommend this book. I just felt the end was too abrupt and didn’t do justice to the many threads in the story. Otherwise a great read.

Natural storytelling at its best.
If you could sum up I'll Keep You Safe in three words, what would they be?
Beautiful evocative writing
Have you listened to any of Anna Murray and Peter Forbes ’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I loved both performances. I will now look for books spoken by both, but especially by Anna Murray.
