Publisher's Summary

When Karen Drew is found sitting in her wheelchair staring out to sea with her throat cut one chilly morning, DI Annie Cabbot, on loan to Eastern Area, gets lumbered with the case. Back in Eastvale, that same Sunday morning, 19-year-old Hayley Daniels is found raped and strangled in the Maze, a tangle of narrow alleys behind Eastvale's market square, after a drunken night on the town with a group of friends, and DCI Alan Banks is called in. Banks finds suspects galore, while Annie seems to hit a brick wall - until she reaches a breakthrough that spins her case in a shocking and surprising new direction, one that also involves Banks. Then another incident occurs in the Maze which seems to link the two cases in a bizarre and mysterious way.

As Banks and Annie dig into the past to uncover the deeper connections, they find themselves also dealing with the emotional baggage and personal demons of their own relationship. And it soon becomes clear that there are two killers in their midst, and that at any moment either one might strike again.

good story, weak characters

DCI Banks mysteries are always good stories with several sub plots intertwining--so this is a good read overall. The main characters are okay but a bit insipid (i see why the TV version needed to add an additional female lead with more oomph).

Initially i was put off by the dated language/attitudes. Annie--the main female cop-- "feels like a whore" and is slut shamed by Winsome, A female doctor/pathologist notes that having a tattoo doesn't make someone "a tart" etc etc. Of course sexism, racism and homophobia are rife in the police-force as elsewhere but these days you'd expect some push back from the more enlightened characters. i also found the narrator's over-enunciated style a bit icky when it came to describing female bodies on the slab.

However, the story does pan out well.

Solid addition to the series

One of the longer novels in the series but equally intriguing. Strong clever plot as usual and great depth to the characters.

I can’t wait to read/listen to the next one.

Enthralling

Once again an enthralling storyline with great detail of the characters, Banks, Annie and Winsom. A great listen!
