Publisher's Summary

Dexter Morgan isn't exactly the kind of man you'd bring home to your mum. At heart he's the perfect gentleman: He has a shy girlfriend and seems to lead a quiet, normal life bordering on the mundane. Despite the fact that he can't stand the sight of blood, he works as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police.

But Dexter also has a secret hobby: He is an accomplished serial killer. So far he's killed 36 people and has never been caught because he knows exactly how to hide the evidence. And while that may lead some people to assume he's not such a nice guy, he tempers his insatiable hunger for brutality by killing only the bad guys.

However, Dexter's well-organised life is suddenly disrupted when a second, much more visible serial killer appears in Miami. Intrigued that the other killer favours a style similar to his own, Dexter soon realises that the mysterious new arrival is not simply invading his turf but offering him a direct invitation to come out and play....

Got to love this book!!

Am I weird to say I loved it? Maybe, but what a great story - and twist to boot!

Excellent.

Almost perfect, was a big fan of the series and I like this even more. While Jeff Lindsay isn't exactly a professional narrator he still does an amazing job and since he is the author he knows the exact emotions that the characters are conveying. So in a sense there is no better person for it.

Bare-bones story.

I was really looking forward to reading this book. I loved the tv series, and was hoping that there were things in the book that were overlooked, but I was wrong. The tv series fleshed the characters out so much more. I'm not a big fan of having an author narrate their own book, and this was a perfect example why.

Fun Listening experience!

A big fan of the series, I decided to jump into the books. Performance by Lindsay is top class. You can definitely feel his knowledge of his work and the characters shine through.

Was hard to distance the book from the series, and at times felt a little lost with some parts of the story rambling on. But the story is still gripping, and I feel it's just me judging the story from a different perspective, having seen the show.

Will definitely be getting the rest of the Dexter series! Worth it!!

Excellent

Listening to Jeff reading his books is a real experience. Some narrators are good, but they don’t know the characters like the author does. You’re basically listening to actual Dexter telling his story. The tone, inflection and pace is all Dexter. I bought the whole set and didn’t regret it one iota.

Brought to life

Jeff Lindsay brought this to life even more than the TV show and it was awesome to hear how some of the names are actually pronounced

Painful

I was not a fan. I didn't like the writing or the narrator. Dexter is an amazing super genius, and everyone around him (particularly women) are a bunch of dithering idiots. The writer enjoys alliteration far too much for my liking (which I suppose I should have gathered from the title of this and the sequels). Also it just didn't need to be this long. I normally catch myself skipping back through audiobooks because I've missed something, but here I was able to multitask, tune in and out, and find that I had not missed much at all because he was still droning on about how Dexter isn't a normal person and doesn't understand feelings. Not a fan of this at all.
