When the story heats up, he is serving out his annual two-week hitch aboard the Seventh Fleet Commander's flagship a few hundred miles away in the Sea of Japan. Thinking it a low priority issue, Navy officials dispatch the Reservist to run a mission to evacuate scientists from a nearby island. Events on the island will not only reunite him with an old love interest but also place him in a position to affect the balance of power between the U.S. and China for years to come.
