Publisher's Summary

In the green depths of spring, morning breaks on a woman splayed in a bed of flowers - her eyes wide, her neck broken. Her death is a mystery; so is the woman herself. But as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his team peer into the dark corners of the victim's past, they expose a secret that rots at the very heart of their community - a secret that will implicate someone they've trusted for years. And as Gamache knows too well, in the flickering shadows of death, the truth may be just a trick of the light.

Best Louise Penny so far!

Best Louise Penny mystery yet! I loved it! Favourite characters from the past, intriguing new ones, a complex mystery, musings of philosophy and insights about the art world ....and humour! What more could one want!

Just wonderful

Love this series. The characters continue to develop with each novel. It’s a gentle relaxing listen and the narration is perfect.

Louise and Adam deliver again!!

Yet another spectacular installment in the Chief Inspector Gamache series! I love the regular characters, the new additions, the plot, the character development, and the weaving of extra story lines amongst the main plot. Adam Sims' narration is brilliant as always, and is in fact how I discovered Louise Penny - I was looking for audio books narrated by Adam! I enjoyed the references to the art world, and as a foodie I especially appreciate the detailed descriptions of French cuisine! Bring on the next book I say!!

Ok, but not her best

Narrator let the recording down by starting out with a plumy English accent for Gamache, and then at times lapsing into the one that he uses in all the later books I’ve listened too.
I must have only listened to later volumes as this one is set before Annie gets together with Gamache’s 2nd in command. I don’t like the pre Annie version of him
