Publisher's Summary

Two damaged children: Teddy Brex, whom no-one loved, and so found it easier to relate to objects or things which never let him down; and Francine Hill, who was discovered sitting by the body of her mother, her skirt red with blood. She couldn’t tell the police or her father anything to help track down the killer.... Children grow up in different ways. Teddy became a handsome young man, Francine was beautiful - a sight for sore eyes. But it was death that brought them together.

A good read

I enjoyed the detailed description throughout and the discussion of power, sanity and freedom. However, I found myself wishing it would move along at a faster pace.

So cleverly written

Ruth Rendell is so clever to write this amazing story. You could never predict what was going to happen. Wonderful characters that you would hopefully never meet in real life but so interesting to meet in this narrative.

Great story!

Great story, well read. Enjoyed it immensely, lots of description and you could live along side any of the characters- except maybe the murderer!

Well-drawn characters

As usual,Ruth Rendell has put together a thoroughly enjoyable book and the narrator has not let her down.
She draws such complex characters that you are immersed in their very real worlds. I highly recommend this author.

Not what i expected

i love Ruth Randall, found this book boring and had to keep going back and listening to the chapters again. Really strange as i normally can't put her books down. :(

Psychological Drama?

Although rather long, I found the story compelling and wanted to keep listening till I got to the end. If it was a paperback I would have had trouble putting it down.

Very dark

Ruth Rendell’s masterful writing and exquisite understanding of suspense are not to be missed. The narrator is superb. Overall I found the story a bit too dark for my taste… but I still couldn’t put it down!

Very slow going

Really well written and a very quirky end but I don’t think it was worth 14 hours of my life
