Publisher's Summary

Coyote made Mother Earth angry. Coyote made the deer dance. Now Coyote has returned, trailing violence and death.

From a New Mexico arroyo, a bullet-ridden body has been mysteriously dragged to a highway. In a small town, a lawman is swamped by complaints of coyote attacks. On Navajo land, a young man faces the truth about who he is, where he comes from, and where he must go.

Investigating the murder of a Navajo leader, Sheriff Cliff Lansing comes up against an official whitewash that has branded the victim a drug dealer. But Lansing's deputy, Gabe Hanna, has already made a connection between the dead man and a multimillion-dollar timber deal on Navajo land. Suddenly, a land torn between ancient spirits and high-stakes power struggles is burning with violence. And as men die, the Trickster, Coyote, runs through the land-demanding justice and revenge.

Hints of Leaphorn and Longmire

Enjoying this series, a lot, the area it is set in brings back wisps of Tony Hillerman and Leaphorn, and the characters have the grit, humor, and depth of the Longmire stories. I think its the best of both worlds in a new one. Navajo & Hopi mysticism, history and traditions, background the stories in a wonderful way. I am looking forward to the rest of the series, and hope it grows and continues for a long time!

I enjoyed the ambience and location

and the plot is basically good. It's just a bit tedious when the author has characters propose ridiculous solutions or ignores the obvious -- to provide length and suspense. But i will read another -- to visit the culture and location. NOT as good as Tony Hillerman.

Great for Tony Hillerman fans

I'm a big Tony Hillerman fan and am always on the lookout for similar stories. This one is very well done, with a well developed plot & characters, and nice attention to detail. I appreciated the strong, dimensional, and realistic female character. Highly recommended!

Yes,I did love this book. Kinda like settling in for a really good western on a December Saturday when it's too cold to do much else. This surprised me being such a far cry from my preferred
British procedurals all serious and cerebral. Good mystery very slowly
exposed, Navaho myth and mystique,
horses, motorcycles, outdoor fun in the sun. I'm going to listen to another.
