Publisher's Summary

Legend. Myth. Nightfall has long been rumored to be nothing more than whispers on the breeze.

If only it were so. In those halls of darkness, where children are taken from the world and given to shadow and dust, Asher is destined for that same fate. He will become the myth. He will become the legend. He will become the whisper of Death itself.

That which he was is dead; forgotten. Now he is a blade in the dark, a weapon to be wielded by his masters. A killer.

Yet, despite all his training and years of spilling blood, there is a crack in Asher’s conditioning. Something within him is broken, unbound even. A sliver of humanity has survived and dreams of freedom. Now, standing on a knife’s edge, his mind threatens to unravel, taking him from the only path he has ever known and away from the clutches of Nightfall.

It has never been done. Exile is not a choice. It is a death sentence.

But there is another life that calls to him, a life roaming the wilds and protecting the innocent from the monsters which would prey upon them. Hunting monsters, however, is no easy task, especially when Asher himself is hunted by those who would drag him back to Nightfall.

Back to the darkness.

Great start to a prequel series

I mean it's more Asher, what's not to love.

It's also very friendly for people that haven't yet read the Echoes Saga, and doesn't require any prior knowledge

More Asher what’s not to like.

If you’re a fan Philip Quaintrell‘s writing then you won’t be disappointed. Moves at a reasonable pace. We don’t learn much new about Asher except how the Ranger gig got started. Funny thing about the first Ranger Asher meets. If you can do math you are given a strange feeling about the backstory that just doesn’t add up for this character is it an Easter egg I’m 72 years old and I’m not really sure what a Easter egg is. Poor Asher what a life he lived. If you think you have it tough Asher will make you laugh at yourself.

Good story with great plot twists with old and new characters. Prequel books often disappoint not this one. Stephen Brand is one of my favorite readers. Felt like putting on your favorite pair of Blue Jeans.

Great read

I have listened to the Echoes Saga twice and loved it each time. I was so excited to listen to this start to a new trilogy. Loved this as well. The stories and characters are well written and stories so well thought out! Now I have to try to contain myself for the second book of the trilogy to come out!

hard to get through

I have not finished the book. I am still trying to get through the first half. I admit it is very difficult to keep listening. The narrator does a great job, but the story is so inconsistent. The main character is supposed to be this top-dog assassin from a mythical order of assassins, trained his whole life to be unstoppable, yet he is making mistake after mistake. He is never winning fights without some last minute attempt at basically getting lucky or just getting beat up until he decides to do something right. it's annoying. I don't expect everything to work perfect in a story, that would also be annoying, but I do expect a guy to do something correct when he has trained his whole life for it.

Good but painful

So your gonna go after a monster and you know it's poisonous and not take the stone that can cure you? no no wait until after it nearly kills you then spend a chapter describing how sick you are trying to get to that same stone. yes it's a painful listen

Epic!

Steven Brand brings to life a wonderful story!

As a 170+ Audible listener> I gives this a perfect score in all sections. reminds me of a perquall to Anthony Ryan's: Blood Song. due to the same Narration and similar Assassin themes.

this was a surprisingly great read. this was my first book by the author and listening to the narrator. I was surprised. it was definitely a sophisticated tale that I could not predict with great magic tropes and in-depth characters. can't wait to the next one comes out!

Excellent!

This is my favorite Quaintrell story so far! He writes excellent ensemble adventures but Asher and the Rangers are by far my favorite of his creations. Eagerly looking forward to the next!

Like a pair of comfortable shoes

Asher without doubt was the best character within the previous chronicles. This further exploration of his past is a very welcome addition and doesn’t disappoint. Fast paced and with some good plot twists thrown in. A very welcome and comfortable addition to the series can’t wait for the next book !

hooked afresh

After following the echoes saga as soon as the next books were released I was not sure how Philip could keep up the spark and fire of the characters in the prequels, after all their individual history and previous life was already told to good depths. Yet here we are court of assassins caught me right from the start and put me back in the familiar names, places and sounds while telling so many new things about the characters and places I am already waiting for the next book.

brilliant, simply brilliant

I love the work of philip, Asher is such an interesting character. I thought his story was to progress as a sequel to the previous saga. I hadn't guessed it would be a prequel. just simply brilliant. Steven Brand again brings a book and the characters to life. fantastic work.

Expected more

On its own this is an excellent book but it unfortunately fall short of the high standards that Philip had set for himself with the previous Echoes saga books and especially with the character Asha. This book just seemed to be rushed? Although in saying that if there is another book in the pipe line that furthers Asha,'s store and introduces some of the other rangers and characters from the Echoes saga, Then I will be first in line to get it.......
