George Sand et Victor Hugo étaient exactement contemporains et pourtant ils ne se sont jamais rencontrés. Il faudra même attendre l'année 1856 pour qu'ils entament une relation épistolaire. On connaissait depuis longtemps la magnifique correspondance entre Sand et Flaubert, on avait également publié les lettres d'amour entre l'auteur de Lélia et le poète des Nuits, mais personne ne s'était encore interrogé sur le mystère que représente cette relation tardive et incomplète entre les "deux monstres sacrés" du XIXème siècle.
