Publisher's Summary

The compelling stand-alone novel from the Sunday Times best-selling author of Unseen and Criminal.

1970s Atlanta: A time of great change and yet for many the fierce desire to keep things exactly the same is still strong. For women like Maggie Lawson and Kate Murphy every day is a battle. From different sides of the tracks they are united in their determination to be good cops. But they have to fight the prejudice of people like Maggie's uncle Terry who are convinced a woman's place is in the home. And all this in a city where 10 cops are killed a year and most of the city is a no-go area - even for their male colleagues. Then Jimmy's partner is shot dead and Maggie and Kate find themselves caught up in a case that forces them to make choices. Choices that have far reaching consequences - for them, for the police force, and for the community as a whole.

As usual, Karin Slaughter is a genius

There’s nothing to dislike about this book. Fast paced, thrilling, and compelling. Characters that are easy to get attached to, and believable.
The narration is well done, obviously a talented voice actor.

Exceptional Slaughter

I have listened to most of Karin Slaughter's books, but there is something special about those based in the 1970's. And this is no exception.

Not as good as her later books

I love Karin Slaughter. She never lets me down - not until this one. I think for me, there were no characters that I could really identify with. This was an audiobook for me and while the reader was good, her voice grated on me. A cigarette voice - coupled with the propensity of unlikeable male characters - made my ears hurt. So as far as my great admiration for Karin Slaughter, I am happy that this was an early book because she is on fire with her later ones.

RIVETING!

Fast paced cop drama set sometime in the early 70's, Georgia USA. Woman couldn't open their own bank accounts without a male relative going guarantor, Afro-American's were still being segregated AND women certainly couldn't be cops.... could they?
Karin Slaughter at her best, Lorelei King is brilliant!

If you like Karin Slaughter you'll like this.

I struggled initially with the narrator's speech patterns, but came to realise she did a great job with all of the voices.
The story was gritty as all Karin Slaughter books are, but it held me to the end. A great reminder of how far society has progressed in 45 years!

Gripping to the end, with plenty of laughs in between

Gripping to the end, with plenty of laughs in between. I stayed awake all night as I couldn’t stop listening.

Too convoluted.

The story develops very slowly with a lot of convolutions and retrospections. Couldn’t even get to half-way mark.

my least favorite of the Karin Slaughter's books.

The story just drags on! Characters are borderline annoying and I struggled to finish the book!
