About this listen

In a remote fishing village on the Coral Sea, Afghanistan veteran Daniel Grey has found a fresh start on a fishing boat run by his old high school coach. As he pieces together his shattered life, he develops an unexpected friendship with Remy, the coach’s troubled autistic daughter. Together, they have a chance to help each other overcome their isolation and find their way in the world. But just when there is hope, one terrifying incident threatens everything....

Cooktown is a confronting and tender novel which unflinchingly examines our need for human closeness via unforgettable characters set adrift from society.

I enjoyed this read - it was a great exploration of the damage we can encounter and carry in life and an engaging story of similarities and difference, delusion and self discovery.
I find Always of value to shine a light on the burden of war/combat experience and subsequent reintegration into the community. Remy’s story also engaging although the second string.
well performed by narrator.

time well spent
