About this listen

The New York Public Library. A silent sanctuary of knowledge; a 100-year-old labyrinth of towering bookcases, narrow aisles and long marble hallways. For Doctor Stephen Swain and his daughter, Holly, it is the site of a nightmare. Because for one night this historic building is to be the venue for a contest. A contest in which Swain is to compete - whether he likes it or not. The rules are simple: Seven contestants will enter, only one will leave. With his daughter in his arms, Stephen Swain is plunged into a terrifying fight for survival. The stakes are high, the odds brutal. He can choose to run, to hide or to fight - but if he wants to live, he has to win. For in this contest, unless you leave as the victor, you do not leave at all.©2000 Matthew Reilly. At first I once thought the book had started and I started listening to the story I thought this book sounded ridiculous, so I persevered with it. After a while I started understanding the punch line of the Story, then I became intrigued with the story. I was so use to Matthew Reilly’s other Story books I thought it was going to intense like they were for the likes of Ice Station, Scarecrow, Temple etc... But it’s nothing like those story once I listened to the whole story. In the end it turned out to be a good Story line, Thanks Matthew Reilly for yet another great Audio Book. I’m still waiting for the next Jack West Jnr Audiobook Novel to be released as I have read all of the Jack West Series and all the Shane Schofield aka the “ Scarecrow “, I’m hoping there would be more of the Scarecrow to come as well as Jack West Jnr novel. Sean Mangan tells these stories with great pride, he is very well suited for telling these great stories of Matthew’s.

I really enjoy the works of Matthew Reilly, however in my opinion he hadn’t really hit his stride yet when he wrote this book. Still a very enjoyable listen, and I think the story would make a terrific film, but it doesn’t really work in an audiobook format. I’m in particular thinking of a section that went on for several minutes where the narrator just read out a printout of meaningless data - I ended up just skipping through until it was over. Sadly the narration also doesn’t live up to Sean Mangan’s usual standard, with very strange choices of inflection and tone in many places. All in all I do recommend this one, however don’t expect it to be an altogether easy listening experience.

Great book that didn’t translate well to audio.

Ive been a fan of Matthew Reilly ever since 7 Ancient Wonders and I have read all his works to date. For Contest, some parts are a bit slow and overexplained, I know it was his first book. It can be a struggle waiting for a character to realise something obvious and situation or computer generated lists that work well in a book are torture in audiobook form. It is however still a typical matthew reilly book with the action taking place in a rapid non stop way, this pace is the reason I love these books and struggle to put them down.

Recommend! Alien, Predator and Jurassic Park in 1
