Publisher's Summary

Pride & Prejudice meets alternate history.

Six years after Napoleon's invasion of England....

Fitzwilliam Darcy is a traitor. He even admits to collaborating with Napoleon's troops. And Elizabeth Bennet despises all traitors.

But she can't make sense of Darcy. He doesn't act like a traitor. He risks his own safety to save young women from the French. And how can she despise a man who loves puppies? Something about him doesn't add up - and she finds him far too attractive.

Then Darcy's carefully constructed world crumbles, and he must entrust his closest-held secret to Elizabeth. To protect that secret, Elizabeth must disappear entirely, leaving her family and Darcy behind, to plunge herself into the dizzying world of fashionable London and the dangers of the Loyalist Resistance. Nothing will ever be the same again.

Darcy is determined to find Elizabeth. Now that she knows the truth about him, there's nothing to keep them apart - nothing, that is, until the day Darcy is forced to choose between his country and the life of the woman he loves....

Brilliant!

I baulked at buying this book for the longest time because I could not bear to read a story where England was under French rule.

The main reason I finally succumbed was the fact that I already own so many P&P variation audiobooks, I can no longer find one that interests me enough to buy. Either the storyline, or the fact that the book is only two minutes long, or the narrator turns me off buying.

Whatever the reason, I am so glad that I finally bit the bullet, because this book is amazing. Abigail Reynolds has truly surpassed herself. Her imagination knows no bounds as she shows us an England under French rule and makes it truly believable. You also cannot help being invested in her characters, not least Darcy and Elizabeth.

I won’t go through the ins and outs of the plot because the synopsis tells all, and if that is not enough, there are plenty of other reviews giving glimpses of the plot.

I would not have succumbed to the lure of this book though if the narrator had been any one other than Elizabeth Klett. She is one of the main narrators of Abigail Reynolds’ works, and she is by far the best.

Definitely a winner and I definitely recommend.

Butterflies, Goosebumps, And A Lot Of Tears!

In this Pride and Prejudice variation, Napoleon invaded England in 1805 and conquered it, imprisoning royalty and stripping nobles of their lands and titles. Now England lives under French occupation. When the story begins, Mr. Bingley has arrived at Netherfield Park with his friend Mr. Darcy, a man everyone knows is a traitor.

I would go on with a summary, but I don't want to spoil any part of the book for anyone. The revelation of the new state of affairs for the Bennet family had me on pins and needles, and you need to experience that for yourself! This was one of the most original P & P variations I've ever read. It told a completely new story, and only borrowed characters and locations from P & P. Every once in a while the author dropped in a phrase from the original novel, and it was so fun to pick them out.

As for the plot itself, it was really well done. Meticulously researched, wonderfully creative, expertly written, and full of witty dialogue. The book had so many romantic scenes between Lizzy and Darcy, but also managed to be action packed and suspenseful. Expect butterflies, goosebumps, and a lot of tears!

Narration can really make or break the listening experience, especially in a book with so many French accents. Elizabeth Klett ranks up there with Kate Reading, Rosalyn Landor, and Davina Porter for me. Her regular speaking voice is so pleasant, and her French accents a delight. She's incredibly talented, and did an outstanding job with this professional narration.

I received a copy of the audiobook at my request, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

Reynolds does it again...

I didn't even bother to read what this book was about before purchasing because Abigail Reynolds has yet to publish something I haven't been able to put down. To say she has out done her self would be the understatement of the year.

The alternate history sets the backdrop for one of the most adventurous Pride and Prejudice stories I've ever had the pleasure to read/listen to.

I laughed, cried, and laughed again. The new characters were just as lovable as their original counterparts.

This story couldn't have been told better!

Brava, Abigail!

Sweet read

Abigail Reynolds has a lovely writing style, it flows smoothly and makes for a fast paced read. The cast of characters were likeable and fun. For me personally, Elizabeth and Darcy didn't remind me of JA's characters, but I really enjoyed them as new characters. The author also created an ending that tied everything up including all the minor story lines. I appreciate when an author takes the time to do this, especially as many of the minor characters are often my favourite ones. Conceit and Concealment was also a fun 'what if story'. I found it interesting to read her interpretation of what life would have been like had the French invaded Great Britain. I loved that at the end of the book she include the actual historical situation regarding Napoleon's plans for a British invasion. It had me running to the computer to do some more research:)

Narration: Elizabeth Klett's narration was an excellent choice for a P&P variation. Her tone and pacing fit the period very well. She is also capable of doing appropriate voices for the cast of characters including men and French accents. I have listened to her before narrating the Cuckoo in Spring by Elizabeth Cadell. She is definitely a narrator that I will follow.

Fun Facts: Elizabeth Klett is from...(think about that beautiful English accent)... New Jersey! Abigail Reynolds states that her hobbies do NOT include sleeping or housework. I believe it! As a Physician and an Author (of a ton of books) when on Earth would she find time!

For those who like to know... there is absolutely no sex, foul language or violence. It's a lovely sweet clean read:)

I received Conceit and Concealment free in exchange for an unbiased review.

Entertaining Twist to Pride & Prejudice

This was a great alternate reality for Pride & Prejudice. The story was entertaining and very original. I enjoyed the adventure, danger, suspense, romance, and unexpected twists.

The narration was well done and brought the story to life.

This is by far the best variation I have heard from Pride & Prejudice. It is set in an alternate reality where England has been invaded and conquered by the French/Napoleon.

I'm looking forward to reading/listening more books by this talented author.

Interesting Twist!

I have enjoyed Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, and found this twist on the original premise to be very good. The story is original and yet has some very familiar details. I thought the narrator did an excellent performance with the various characters and emotions. Both the author and narrator are very talented, and I will look for more of their works. My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of it. This is a sweet story that is a clean listen and full of so much imagery. extremely original

The most original P&P variation that still feels like it could be Darcy and Elizabeth. So well researched.

Love, Love, Love this Audible book!

This book was sensational and I am so sad there is not a sequel. The story was wonderful but the truly best part was the performance by the reader, Elizabeth Klett. I swore there were many readers but it was just her marvelous ability to do many different voices. The story was fun and not trivial. I highly recommend this great book. I didn't want it to end!

Absolutely amazing!

This may be the best P&P variation I’ve listened to on Audible. The alternate universe that Abigail Reynolds has created is thoroughly spellbinding.

Alternative History!

There is so much to love about this book! First off, we see London as it would be if the French had won the Napoleonic Wars. Mr. Darcy is not a stuffy, wealthy landowner, but a man loyal to the crown. So much so he is will to sacrifice life in Pemberly to live a very different existence.

Elizabeth and Darcy meet under the sweetest circumstances, how can she resist a man who loves puppies?

I can't say anymore without blowing the plot, but trust me dear reader you do want to read this story.

I rarely write reviews , but I loved this book!

I enjoyed this story of ODC. The friendship between Darcy and General Desmarais was a treasure and the tale of Georgiana was riveting. Would love to read a sequel to this book. The narration by Elizabeth Klett was outstanding. I will definitely have to listen to this book again.

A very different P&P variation

In the myriad of P&P variations, I think this one is unique in having Darcy and Elizabeth meet while England is under occupation by Napoleon. I really enjoyed it, but I think it should have been shorter. There are several occasions when the story gets bogged down and isn't very interesting, especially during a long stretch where they're separated. Despite it's flaws, its still well worth reading/listening to.

This is my first audio book, found it difficult at

times because I'm a fast reader but once I got used to the pace I really enjoyed it. Narration was very good.
