L'opera può considerarsi il progenitore del romanzo esistenzialista, e, anche se all’inizio non ebbe un grande successo, nell'ultimo decennio del Novecento, con i saggi di Giacomo Debenedetti, Alberto Moravia, Carlo Cassola, Luigi Baldacci, è stato ampiamente rivalutato e la sua opera è stata collocata al vertice della letteratura del secolo.
