Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of the Rock Chick series comes a story of love, murder, and second chances....

When small-town Nebraska sheriff Hixon Drake meets Greta Dare, the connection couldn't be stronger, but the timing couldn't be worse.

Dealing with the fallout of a divorce he never wanted and setting up a new home for his kids, Hix becomes that guy, that one he never wanted to be, and puts a stop to things before they can even start. Protecting his kids and himself is his only priority.

Greta, on the other hand, has found the place for her and the brother she adores that's perfect for them - a sleepy little town in Nebraska. She's learned from life that there are no hopes and dreams. The only thing to look forward to is peace. And that's what she works hard to build for herself and her brother. Right up until Hix walks into her life.

Hix can't fight the pull and stay away from Greta for long. And Greta's finding it hard not to hope for something more with all the promise that is Hix.

But when the first murder that's happened in over five decades rocks his small, sleepy county, Hix has got to learn to trust again, convince Greta to take a shot with him, and at the same time catch a killer.

In other words, things are definitely...Complicated.

Fans of old school Kristen Ashley will rejoice

2.5 stars - It was OK/I liked it

Complicated is an audio only release for the first six months. My review is based on the audio version I listened to.

AUDIO
I am a regular audio book listener and I relisten regularly to other Kristen Ashley books that I enjoy. With the odd exception, I typically first read the written version of a book before listening to the audio version. Having to swap my usual methodology meant I listened more actively than I usually would. It wasn't difficult. If anything, I easier recalled names, places and circumstances as the story went on.

Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon were the narrators. They did a great job. Their voices were age appropriate. Voice changes for other characters were different enough so that I never wondered who was speaking. And their version of voices for the opposite sex was good. It's a unique skill and I have listened to several audio books where this is poorly done and my enjoyment of the book suffered. I will definitely be on the lookout for other books Lance and Erin have narrated.

My one criticism, and this is not unique to this audio version at all, is on occasion, the tone of the voice does not always reflect the emotion described. If a character is described as sad, happy, angry, tired etc. then the narration should follow. There are times this didn't happen and it caused me to rewind to check if I had missed anything.

Not living in the US nor having a great interest in accents, I cannot comment on the accuracy of the accents. I realise there are regional differences but it's not the kind of detail I focus on. The speech was clear and understandable which means it passes the test for me.

STORYLINE
There are parts I enjoyed and others I thought were underwhelming.

Fans of old school Kristen Ashley will rejoice. Anyone who has enjoyed the Colorado Mountain, Burg, Dream Man, Rock Chick and Magdalene series will likely appreciate the return of such a storyline; a small town, main characters circa 40 years of age, ex wives, children, families and the baggage they bring and a murder to be solved.

The downside of this is I found the overall story to be somewhat stale and a repetition of what has come before. There were many times when the language, mannerisms and even fashions could have been copied from other KA books.

Some of the dramas that occur in the book also felt... perhaps not forced but deliberate? Deliberate in the sense they were used to drive the story and characters but were not in themselves integral to the outcome. Any other incident/circumstance could have just as easily been substituted without the main characters altering course.

My favourite characters were Greta and Andy. They were brilliant and even though it arose from hardship and tragedy, I loved the portrayal of this sister and brother relationship.

I enjoyed learning about Greta's second job as a lounge singer and I liked the music choices. If nothing else this book introduced me to Annie Lennox's song 'Cold'. I've never heard this song before and I loved it. When it's first mentioned in the book I urge you to stop listening/reading the book and listen to the song.

In conclusion, KA fans will likely give this a big thumbs up but for me it's 'same same but different'. Now go Google that term if you're not familiar with it. 🙂

Kristen Ashley has done it again!

I love Kristen Ashley's books. The story was great, characters i became invested in and having the two narrators was a good way to show the two main characters point of view. Loved the ending which I didn't see coming and now just disappointed that I have finished listening to the story.

Enjoyed, but slow at times

I'm a big KA fan, so I was very eager to dive into this audio when it first came out. I enjoyed the story and was able to get invested into Gwen and Hicks story, both apart and together. The slow burn of their developing relationship at the beginning, reeled me, and I loved how it all came together. A great combination of romance, mystery and laughter, it made my commute to work and home much more enjoyable. I won't lie in saying that I may have taken a longer route every now and then.

The narrators did a great job, and I actually really enjoyed having the two narrators for the two different POV. I found it helped keep the flow better. And I absolutely loved listening to Lance Greenfield as Hicks. He was perfect.

While I mostly enjoyed the wonder of KA's story - and I'm not sure if this is because it's my first audio from KA, but I found the details in this book slightly exhausting. It didn't occur all the time, however there were times when I felt the explanation of certain tedious things rather wasteful. The urge to 'skip' for thirty seconds was rather tempting once in a while, but once the story moved along, it was great.

Slow and tedious

Blow by blow descriptions of each of the main characters lives, their relationship and sexual activity - the real action started hours into my listening and by then I was sick of the characters. Gave up on it!!
