Publisher's Summary

You are a step away from learning how to have a successful backyard garden comprised of healthy, organic fruits, vegetables, and animals to supply you with fresh farm produce for your own consumption or for sale!

Are you looking for a way to turn your tiny spare land into a mini-farm and make money out of it?

Have you been having a dream to stay amidst a natural homestead with refreshing crops and soothing animals and spend the rest of your days fully healthy, independent, unflustered, and happy?

Or, are you trying to improve your farming methods to have better yields, generate more income, and generally increase viability of your farming efforts?

Whatever your goal is, you are at the right place.

It is true, farming can be discouraging and frustrating, especially for someone with precise goals which are being unmet or for someone who loves farming with a passion but is not seeing progress in the practice or seeing positive results.

If you’re new to this, you might even feel more confused as you don’t even know where to begin!

As such, you might wonder:

  • What am I doing wrong?
  • What does it really take to be a successful farmer?
  • Is it about the space? The nutrients? The seeds?
  • How can I avoid common mistakes and sail through?
  • What do I need to grow or rear to be successful?
  • How do I deal with weeds, pests, and diseases?
  • How do I combine crop and animal farming in my garden?

If you can relate, this two-in-one book will prove extremely helpful. It contains the steps any beginner should take to get started with mini-farming successfully, as well as the do's and don’ts for intermediates to boost their farming and achieve their goals effortlessly and effectively.

Here’s a bit of what it covers:

  • The basics of mini farming, including what it is, how it works, and why you should venture into mini farming
  • How to maximize your space to have a viable, productive mini-farm
  • How to choose the right plants for mini-farming
  • What are the steps you need to take to build the mini-farm
  • How to select the right tools and equipment for your mini-farm
  • How to maintain your mini-farm
  • How to raise the beds, handle soil composition, and maintain your setup.
  • How to optimize plant nutrients, have the right timing, and sufficient yields
  • How to set up an irrigation system, proportion, and sizing of your crops
  • How to select the seeds and prepare seedlings in your home for the best start in mini-farming
  • How you can control pests and diseases effectively
  • How to work with seasons
  • How to grow the trees and vines for fruits
  • How to rear chicken for eggs and meat
  • How to store your harvest to last longer
  • What you need to do to sell your produce
  • And much more!

As you’ll soon see, starting and maintaining a successful mini-farm doesn’t have to be difficult.

BEST, compared to other books of its kind.

LOOK NO FURTHER!! This book is amazing and filled with information from front to cover with ZERO "fluff." My kind of book. If you are looking for serious in depth answers and info, this is the book for you. I purchased several other mini farming and organic gardening books and they all disappoint next to this one! Well with the money! My pups and I are very pleased! It is a great addition to our growing hobby/mini farm!

Most informative.

I learned so much from Mr. Markham's wealth of gardening knowledge. The book is enjoyable to read. I believe it will be easy to put some of his practices to work in our organic garden. I expect abundant harvests from a more scientific approach to caring for our garden's soil and the practice of rotating our crops in a more compatible way. I am grateful.

Great book for getting into running a small homest

I am about 3/4's of the way through this book at this point. The book is really good with a ton of information that you would have to learn and earn the hard way over many years. It looks great with nice color pictures. The information on planting and starting your own seed seems great, but being fall I haven't planted anything yet although it does talk about fall cover crops and fall harvests. I have found the sections on getting the soil in your garden ready and getting compost ready to be absolute lifesavers. I went from scratching my head to putting what I have available into both my soil and my new compost. There are a ton of no-nonsense charts in this book. There are several topics in here that are right on target for self sufficiency. I would recommend this book for anyone trying their hands at homesteading.

A great compendium of mini-farming techniques

As a compendium of several different mini-farm management techniques this is a unique book. If anything it is not long enough. He uses several illustrations and photos to make some good points. This is a real strength of the book. I also enjoyed it because he is writing from a northeastern U.S. perspective. His discussion of note taking and careful comparisons of different bed uses should be taken to heart by anyone who wants to be a serious gardener. Moreover discussing both organic and standard farming practices was welcome and appropriate.

Best gardening book yet

This is the best book on gardening that I have come across. The in depth explanations of things like turning soil and making quality compost are enlightening to me (a life long gardener). This book has me ordering a soil test kit, organic fertilizer, and a compost thermometer. I have always been a bit of an under performer in the garden but I think the methods in this gem are going to be a game changer. I highly recommend this book, summer is way too short to have a mediocre garden.

One of the best books on self-sufficient gardening

Excellent source of information, the pictures are also well chosen to help illustrate certain points. I'm also pleasantly surprised to note that the author, unlike so many other books, lists out other options, and is aware that many families may prefer different setups and tastes. So many books try to box you in to their setups...this one provides a flexible instruction guide.

An incredible resource

I read this book as someone who would theoretically like to start growing my food in the future. This book was a fascinating resource for me to get a good idea of how much work would be required and what it would be like to grow my own food. I would recommend it to anyone interested in gardening.

Lovely manual for self-sufficiency

I purchased this book for my dad for father's day. I attached packs of heirloom seeds with some kitchen twine & he loved it! It has some effective farming techniques that can be used even on the smallest scale. It also includes instructions for other self-sufficient activities such as canning. It's a really useful book for beginners.

Brilliant Book.

I thought this was a great book on the nuts and bolts of how multiple small farms operate. This isn't going to give you everything you need to start a farm but lays a solid foundation to work from. Josh puts many things into perspective that I was wondering about as we consider starting a small farm with our son. Highly recommend the book.

Excellent Audio Book.

I have always loved gardening and have a great deal of extra unused land. Have been considering building a market garden/small farm with the land and this book has given me a great deal to consider. Very informative, great model farms, enjoyed the illustrations of each farm. Will need to look into the marketing and finance aspects in more details with other literature though.

The Best in Their Collection.

Good overall information gave insight on the techniques utilized by different market gardeners, along with wisdom gained through trial and error. The planning advice is very good for wannabes and newbies.

Highly Recommended Awesome Book.

awesome book really well done. I wish he had done a couple of farms in the midwest since this is really where most farms are, but it was still well done. I enjoyed the book and learned some great information.

Well Said.

The book is interesting and full of great insight on other market farms. Unfortunately, I couldn’t dive in to listen and devour it like I wanted to because out of the box is smelled so horribly chemical like that I couldn’t listen it without inducing a headache. The other two books shipped with it did not smell. I am hoping the smell will fade over time so I can enjoy the book.

Valuable Book.

Great resource if you're considering farming (or even can be adapted to plan out home gardens) without a lot of land and was interesting to listen about the variety of small farms out there plus the author's experiences. Written very well for its target audience.
