Publisher's Summary

Bold, brave and darkly funny, Come is the extraordinary story of Melbourne sex worker Rita Therese and the love, sex and death she has experienced in her life so far.

Two selves intertwine and it leaves you, in the dance room, making a decision that winged liner is just for work. Because you don't know which self you are looking at right now, which person you are. The song stops and you break out of your trance and ask if he'd like to extend....

Rita is an escort, one of the best in Australia. It all began on a whim at 18, after she rang the number on a sign looking for nude models. Always the outsider, she quickly learns the sex industry is comprised of many other people just like her and she becomes immersed in this world: the drugs, the late nights, the glamour, being an outcast, the attention and validation from men. Mostly she thrives on how taboo her life has become. Following significant personal tragedy and trauma, the line between Rita's sex worker persona Gia and her real self begins to blur in a seemingly endless loop of grief, work, sex, love and heartbreak.

In this achingly honest memoir, Rita learns that death and trauma do not always bring grand transformative experiences. Sometimes, in order to go forward, we have to write our own stories and choose to keep living. With its unflinching, compelling and darkly funny narrative, Come announces a fearless new talent in Australian writing.

Critic Reviews

"A riveting and unforgettable journey. Rita’s ability to take you from despair to laughter to depravity in seconds makes this book utterly addictive. Her words will stay with you like the memory of your first lust and first loss." (Nakkiah Liu)

one person's story

I loved this book, I too have a history of escorting. I could relate to much of this book. I cried multiple times recounting my own emotions of how I felt during that time unable to balance the two identities. The only thing I did not love was that this is not an accurate representation of my experience in the industry. I don't feel that this accurately represents what the industry is like for most. I would urge readers to recognise that this is just one person's story. Her story, and an incredibly vulnerable and honest one at that. great book

Really enjoyed this book. Like no other book I have listened to. Very interesting to hear the story of a girl in the sex industry and what their lives are really like. It was quite dark and raw in parts but very truthful. A talented writer and narrator.

Beautiful, haunting, hilarious

Wow what a beautiful, haunting and hilarious insight into Rita's life. I feel so blessed that she opened herself up like this and divulged some incredibly personal and at times, absolutely heartbreaking sections of her life. This book is so beautifully written and I thoroughly enjoyed how the chapters were constructed. I was laughing one minute, crying the next. I learnt a lot about sex work as a profession and have an even deeper respect for women and non binary people working in the sex industry. Decrim all the way. I downloaded the audiobook out of pure laziness but I'm glad I did as having Tamala narrating the book added another depth. Thank you Rita!

Moving, Sad yet enlightening.

I didn’t really know what to expect from this book, or really even what it was about. That sometimes happens when you impulse purchase the special of the day on Audible. Wow. Rita’s story is so incredible. What this young woman has been through and experienced in such a short time is staggering. It is a sad story yet hopeful. Interesting yet troubling. The narration by Tamala Shelton is brilliant. It really does draw you into Ritas life. It is not for the faint hearted or prudish person. The warts and all story of Ritas life, family, loves and heartache though is compelling and so well written and delivered. Thank you Rita for sharing such intimate details of your life with us, through this book. Amazing.

Not sure exactly

I finished this book in one long drive, it was easy to listen to (although a bit graphic at times which made me squirm in my seat) but I was struggling to grasp the story. I think the narrator was fantastic, which is why it was great to listen to, but the story just wasn’t it. The experiences that this woman has been through are just heartbreaking, sad and.... weird (I guess is the right word?) and it makes you hope that whatever she’s doing now, she is safe, happy and loved. She’s extremely brave for getting through what she’s been through but it felt like she just wrote down all her memories without any particular flow.
