Publisher's Summary

Explore the Cold War and Get a Deeper Understanding of the Korean and Vietnam War

Two captivating manuscripts in one audiobook:

  • Korean War: A Captivating Guide to Korean War History
  • Vietnam War: A Captivating Guide to the Second Indochina War

The narrative of the Korean War in the West, and particularly in the United States, tells the tale of a conflict between two global superpowers and competing ideologies in a far-flung corner of the globe.

The reality is that the wheels of motion that drove the country to war in 1950 began turning long before American boots set foot on Korean soil. The heart of the conflict was a civil war between a population arbitrarily divided by colonization and the global geopolitics at the end of the Second World War.

Part one of this audiobook is about an often-forgotten war, fighting for its place in history between the two behemoths of the Second World War and the Vietnam War, which was no less significant, no less destructive, and had no less impact on the global politics of the twentieth century.

Some of the topics covered in the first part of this audiobook include:

  • The Japanese Ascendency: 1910-1945
  • A Korea Divided: The US Occupation of the South
  • The Forging of the North Korean State
  • First Blood: The Outbreak of War
  • Strike Hard and Strike Fast: The US Retreat
  • Bittersweet Victories: American Revival and China’s Decision to Cross the Yalu
  • How Do You Solve a Problem Like China?
  • The Bloody Ceasefire and Looming Bomb
  • The Legacy of the Korean War
  • And a Great Deal More that You don't Want to Miss out on!

The Vietnam War represented a watershed not only in American and Vietnamese history but also internationally.

Audiobook not too captivating

I downloaded this book to share with my history class, as it said it was captivating. It barely got my attention with the near-robotic narrative and was hard to listen to it much less keep my attention. The person's voice seems like it's sped up, inflections lean on monotone. I want to hear all the facts which seem well laid out, but it's difficult to stay tuned. Maybe the paperback has pictures that make it more interesting?

NIce Author

Any additional comments?

I learned how the Korean War marked the beginning of the building of permanent US bases in foreign nations. These foreign occupations are what US is, and deserves all the attention this author gave.

Amazing War History

This is not a typical 'war history'. The first chapter is a short summary of the battle years, but the book is a more scholarly work that situates that war in the history of China, Korea, Japan and the U.S. How did the war come about? What events, forces and personalities played a role in its inception and ensuing history.

Forgotten Wars

Any additional comments?

The Korean and the Vietnam war are truly forgotten wars. We are ignorant of what really happened. Korea is much in the news these days. The author opens our eyes to the truth about this war, the reasons behind it and its futility. All sides ended up where they started at a horrible cost in lives lost, a country destroyed and hopes lost. The truth is often hard to come to grips with, but for those who value truth it's an important book.

Captivating History

Any additional comments?

I thought I knew a lot about the Korean War having followed it closely as kid growing up and having read several books about it since. Now that I've grabbed captivating history book my eyes have been opened for the first time. Anyone interested in the Korean War or the rise of the American super-power with worldwide interests should read this book.

Korean Conflict

There is a reason the World refers to the Korean conflict as the Forgotten War. It's wishful thinking. Cummings opens our eyes to the scope of the atrocities and savagery of some of the alleged defenders of the free world, from MacArthur to Sygnam Rhee.

Like It

I'm still trying to listen to through it. So far, I've learned that the USA didn't learn anything from this war. AND, they just stepped into Vietnam the same way. HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF, alright!

Good Explanation

A very good explanation of the background to the war beginning in 1932 with the Japanese colonizing of Korea and Manchuria and how that contributed to the outbreak of the war, the brutal conduct of the war, and why the war still hasn't ended.

Frightening

Any additional comments?

I did enjoy very much this summary description of the Vietnam and Korean War, its causes and impact in the world theater. In this condensed form it’s easier to retain the events in one's memory as well as recall and analyze its significance at a later time. Comparing the cause and effect of wars would be a great intellectual exercise. Foremost in my mind would be to learn the lessons of wars to prevent future wars.

Concise Book

Any additional comments?

Concise and full of information. Good, since so much of history taught in schools today ignore this war completely. How sad.
