Publisher's Summary

"Wuthering Heights" is Emily Brontë's only novel. It was first published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, and a posthumous second edition was edited by her sister Charlotte.

The name of the novel comes from the Yorkshire manor on the moors on which the story centers (as an adjective, "wuthering" is a Yorkshire word referring to turbulent weather). The narrative tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted, love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and many around them.

This is lifted directly from a public domain site LibriVox. This is an amateur volunteer recording that can be found for free on many sites.

Story is marvelous as always so either go do this version for free elsewhere or shell out for a quality reading on Audible.

"Loved the Narration, Didn't enjoy the book as much"

While I certainly didn't dislike the book by any means, It was the very odd occasion that I actually liked the various movie versions better than the book. I felt that there weren't any redeeming qualities for the characters. The book portrayed both Cathy and Heathcliff as intolerable people, which made it hard to even care or have a heartfelt feeling for their hardships at all. Actually, it was hard not to just hate them altogether. At least in the movie(s), you got a glimpse of their childhood friendship, as well as their passionate love as teenagers, and even bit of their good natured side (even if it was only a TINY glimpse for heathcliff), but it made you at least have some heart for them and empathy for their agony. It was hard to feel anything at for any of the characters in the book...except for Nellie and Edgar, which is natural I suppose, but I do feel like the book could have allowed for more feeling for the two star crossed lovers.

Impossible to listen to this version. Narrator sounds seriously depressed. The more I listened the more irritable and miserable I became. I tried several times but in the end I just couldn't bear it any longer. I can only assume that Audible don't bother to check the recording narrate on classic books..

Do yourself a favour and give this a miss. I would have given it no stars if I could.

    "Dreary"

Why is the title of the book and the reader's name read out at the end of every chapter? Would not recommend the book n general although it is a classic. The perfrmance is dreary - I suppose that matches the story!

    "A good rendition"

Janet Paulson's narration is of the highest competence with a good depiction of class differences and dialect. My only criticism is that some of the connecting material is narrated in flat, neutral manner which I found grating.

    "An old favourite."

This is probably my all time favourite novel. I've read it many times, always finding something new in it. I much enjoyed having it read to me, especially while out rambling on the cliffs or in the lanes where I live. Very atmospheric. Overall the narrator was very good. Her accent was not bad at all and I appreciated her attempts at differentiation between characters. However. I found the reading of dialogue to be too slow and passionless. Her voices for Cathy and Catherine were actually quite annoying unfortunately. There was no fire or thunder. But her voice for Nellie Dean, the main narrator, was excellent, and her depiction of Joseph was most enjoyable. Overall a good job done.

What a novel - brilliant & chilling. The title announcement at the start & end of every chapter is a bit annoying though.
