Der hochbegabte Student Rodion Raskolnikow lebt in ärmlichen Verhältnissen in St. Petersburg. Er ist ein Einzelgänger, vergeistigt und menschenscheu. Als er von der Verlobung seiner Schwester mit dem einflussreichen Luschin erfährt, ist er bestürzt: Die Hochzeit muss verhindert, seine Schwester ausgelöst werden. Doch Raskolnikow ist mittellos. Nach einem Besuch bei der alten Pfandleiherin Aljona Iwanowna beschließt er, sie zu erschlagen und sich mit dem erbeuteten Diebesgut aus dem Staub zu machen. Zu dem Mord an der "Laus" fühlt er sich berechtigt, da "lebensunwertes" Leben vernichtet gehöre. Raskolnikow plant das perfekte Verbrechen - und wird am Ort des Geschehens von der Schwester der alten Pfandleiherin überrascht, die er ebenfalls kaltblütig erschlägt. Doch sein Gewissen lässt ihm fortan keine Ruhe.
