Publisher's Summary

On the eve of his marriage to the beautiful Mercedes, having that very day been made captain of his ship, the young sailor Edmond Dantès is arrested on a charge of treason, trumped up by jealous rivals. Incarcerated for many lonely years in the isolated and terrifying Chateau d'If near Marseille, he meticulously plans his brilliant escape and extraordinary revenge.

Of all the "masked avengers" and "caped crusaders" in literature, The Count of Monte Cristo is at once the most daring and the most vulnerable. Alexandre Dumas (père), master storyteller, takes us on a journey of adventure, romance, intrigue, and ultimately, redemption.

Wait & Hope... absolute masterpiece

A riveting tale that had my ears glued to the speakers for nights on end. A masterpiece in story telling and one I will listen to again and again.

Well worth the time

I usually struggle to keep engaged with 60hr audio books, but had no trouble with this one. Great story, but lots of characters names to remember.

My favourite book

This is my favorite book off all time. I think listening to it really adds something as it feels like you are overhearing the planning and deceiving as it goes on in real time. I try and listen to this book once a year.

What an epic tale

What did you like best about this story?

A story that is epic and sprawling, yet somehow also quite intimate. What begins as an adventure book melds into a social commentary of the times. Delves into what motivates us as humans; our desires, weaknesses and strengths. You spend time with the elite and the criminals.

What does Bill Homewood bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Bill's pronunciation and voices give life to the characters and they are easily identifiable. He manages to really identify and capture moments that need to be acted out.

Any additional comments?

Some birds in the background of the recording and some old man swallowing. I had read the same and wondered if it would be off putting. It wasn't in the least, the birds when they rarely appeared gave some added character! Farewell Edmond Dantès!

Good story but way too long

I felt like i lived every hour of his time in jail and that was only a quarter of the story

Great book.

Narrator always licking his lips & smacking his tongue dampens the experience. A fantastic classic.

Wonderful, engrossing classic.

This is a title that my father grew up reading and has long spoken about I now see why. A wonderful story which captures all of the attributes of an era of long ago. Excellent narration and a twist at every turn of the tale made this hard to stop listening to. Highly recommend it.
