Before marrying, Emma Bovary believed she would enter a life of luxury and passion like the sentimental stories she'd read in her novels and magazines. Now married to an ordinary country doctor her life is not the romantic ideal she imagined and seeks an escape through having extra-marital affairs. This devastating spiral into deceit and despair leads to catastrophic consequences.
Emma Bovary continues to be enjoyed to this day because of its profound humanity, still as fresh today as when it was first written. But when first released in instalments in the Revue de Paris, the French government accused Flaubert of obscenity. However, the trial that followed and Flaubert's acquittal, only served to increase interest in the story when released as a book, leading to it becoming a best seller in 1857.
Considered Flaubert's masterpiece, the audiobook is an important piece of literary realism and one of the most influential literary works in history. It remains unsurpassed in its unveiling of character and society with its wonderfully subtle understanding of human emotions.

Still as relevant today!
A Classic with a surprisingly relevant observation of on contemporary life. Flaubert’s character study of Emma, satire of mass media and exploration of the patriarchal ideas that dominate married life feel decidedly modern. Excellent narration too!

a rich journey, beautifully narrated
it's hard to admit, but, much like the quality of a film's score, the narrator has such a huge impact on whether an audiobook is actually enjoyable, & ultimately ~ transcendent.
this is one such an example.
wow. the narrator savoured every syllable; every description was gorgeous & delectable, every landscape sparkling & every emotion luscious.
I can't see the sublime experience I had moving thru the heavy dew of these words being bested any time soon.

Why are women always portrayed this way?
What did you like best about Madame Bovary? What did you like least?
The best part is the lovers falling out of love with each other
The lowlight of the book is definitely the ending. It simply ends and the poor child, the only innocent party, is the one most hard done by. Tragic.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Give the kid a chance.
If this book were a film would you go see it?
No, too laborious and not very action packed.
Any additional comments?
Honestly, what is with these literary geniuses who don't get women at all. Firstly, she's unlikely to run off with a fellow just because he happens to be good looking, there's usually a deeper emotional attraction or intrigue. Secondly, if she's fallen, it's highly unlikely she'll be so undone as to kill herself over it. There are far worse things in life than falling in and out of love with someone. Really, the husband was such a pushover all she had to do was tell him and they'd have figured it out. Why on earth do they always kill themselves? It makes such a pathetic finale.
