Story
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Story
The Age of Innocence is a powerful depiction of love and desire in New York's glamorous Gilded Age. When Newland Archer, happily engaged to May Welland, meets his fiancée's cousin Ellen, his entire future is cast into doubt: strong-willed, witty, and entirely unpretentious, Ellen is unlike any woman he has ever met. He is torn between his infatuation for her and his duty to marry May. In subtle and elegant language, Wharton delivers a critical look at the social mores of the time.

Old Testament Typology comes alive.
- By Mike Hooper on 18-03-2024
Publisher's Summary
The wellsprings of desire and the impediments to love come brilliantly into focus in Evelyn Waugh's masterpiece - a novel that immerses us in the glittering and seductive world of English aristocracy in the waning days of the empire.
Through the story of Charles Ryder's entanglement with the Flytes, a great Catholic family, Evelyn Waugh charts the passing of the privileged world he knew in his own youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities.
At once romantic, sensuous, comic, and somber, Brideshead Revisited transcends Waugh's early satiric explorations and reveals him to be an elegiac, lyrical novelist of the utmost feeling and lucidity.

A most charitable novel
The human condition. The tragedy of it and life found in submission. Sweet innocence and acceptance of one's responsibilities as Jesus was offered His vinegar on a rag. God bless Sabastian. God bless Charles and Julia too.

Not enough superlatives to do justice
Everything about this book and Jeremy Irons' narration is superb. Every time I re-read or re-listen to this masterpiece I discover something new or find a new take-away. No review can do it justice - if you haven't read Brideshead, Jeremy Irons' performance is the perfect place to start.

A classic with homosexual overtones
Really interesting listen with some meaty concepts. Jeremy Iron's narration was disappointing. He pretty much just read it with only a feeble attempt at do different voices for the different characters.
