About this listen

The stunning debut from the new name to watch in espionage thrillers. For fans of Charlotte Philby, The Night Manager and Rory Clements, this is perfect Sunday night (or any night) drama.

Lisbon, 1943. After escaping from Nazi-Occupied France, SOE agent Elisabeth de Mornay, codename Cecile, receives new orders: she must infiltrate high society in neutral Lisbon and find out who is leaking key information to the Germans about British troop movements. As Solange Verin, a French widow of independent means, she will be able to meet all the rich Europeans who have gathered in Lisbon to wait out the war. One of them is a traitor, and she must find out who before more British servicemen die.

Complications arise when 'Solange' comes to the attention of German Abwehr officer Major Eduard Graf. As they get to know each other, she struggles to keep her lies close to the truth.

But in a city that is filled with spies, how can she tell who is friend or foe?

Fabulous rollicking tale with gritty details and memorable characters. I loved the narrator- excellent accents & distinct voices.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

Intrigue, action, romance - what’s not to love?

I’ve given this a try, listened to six chapters but I just can’t believe the story. the narrator has a lovely voice and does accents well, but the delivery is in a staccato manner and is annoying.

Ok but not believable

Clever writing and a historically enjoyable fiction.
Well developed characters. I’m off to purchase the next book in the series.

I did not particularly enjoy this book, it was a tough one to finish (unusual for me). It started off well - engaging and intriguing but was long, repetitive and predictable.

Starts off well but fades

Quite interesting, some nice trade craft, interesting read until it turned into a "bodice ripper". Having said that, I'd listen to the author again, loved the readers delivery! Forewarned is forearmed! Overall, worth the time. No Deighton, but time will tell!

spook books by female authors

I enjoyed this book on so many levels. The characterisation was great, the historical facts were interesting and exciting and the narration was top notch. Can’t wait to find out what happens to Lizbet next.

Wonderful

Mistaken for an Alex Gerlis (similar title) i ploughed on until I could take it no longer. "Enough!" I cried, " can't this actor scan a whole sentence befor embarking on it and then running out of steam half way through snd having to tack on the second half with a rise in tone?

The plot is pedestrian and cliched with stock dialogue and wooden characters. Foreign names are tortured (Dechamps does NOT have a pronounced P).

Avoid.

Poor Book, Poorly Read.
