About this listen

Welcome to the city of Angelthene. We hope you survive.

Loren Calla has only ever been ordinary. As a human struggling to survive in a city that caters to the needs of vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural creatures, she always assumed her life would remain simple, predictable, and as safe as her world would allow.

Until she barely escapes abduction at the hands of Darkslayers—supernatural bounty hunters that possess the Sight, a magical tracking ability that allows them to see a person's aura—and one of her friends is taken in her place. The abductors are demanding a ransom: Loren's life in exchange for her friend's safe return. Loren will do whatever it takes to get her friend back—even if it means accepting help from Darien Cassel, the leader of the Seven Devils, the most feared Darkslaying circle in the city.

Darien specializes in tracking down demons and criminals that are better off dead than alive, so when he takes a job to track down Loren and finds out she is human—and couldn't hurt a fly if her life depended on it—he decides to protect her instead of turn her in for a reward. As much as Loren doesn't want to admit it, Darien is her best and only chance at finding her friend alive, if she can somehow manage to get along with him—and not fall head-over-heels in love with him in the process, which is far easier said than done.

When more women start disappearing, and some of them slowly turn up dead, Loren and Darien's search for answers takes them deep into Angelthene's corrupt underbelly, where they discover a dark secret that threatens to unravel their world. And when tragedy strikes, Loren learns that love can make an ordinary person do extraordinary things.

From the author of Dreams of Ice and Iron comes a new fantasy romance perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas, Ilona Andrews, and Cassandra Clare.

Narration: I really liked the narration. My score is based more on the story.
Story: Only thing I didn't love is the age of the characters. I was hoping for more adult and less new adult. Because of this some of the story fell flat for me. Otherwise it is a good book and I will likely continue the series. I just won't be rushing to get to the next one.

Great Narration

This whole book was clearly heavily inspired by various SJM books and it made it hard to get through without being reminded of CC and ACOTAR. Almost DNF'd.

SJM rip off

The dual narration is a nice touch but I can’t stand when they imitate the other characters. Like just use each the other actor to voice the same sex already lol

Asides from this. It’s a decent read. I like the idea of other monsters and spirits, and absolutely love the spin on having a familiar. Few cringey bits but not enough to detract from the overall experience. Brought the sequel as soon as it was released. Easy enjoyable read

Didn’t think I would dig it

Enjoying the story but will most likely go buy the book rather than finish listening- female narrator keeps swallowing loudly and making saliva sounds which is difficult to listen to

Female narrator is distracting

I loved the audiobook! The narrators did such a good job! I loved the story and the characters. Felt like we achieved so much in one book! Cannot wait to move on to book 2! :)

Definitely the character development & plot!!!

Loved the story and loved the slow burn. Sometimes the voice actors didn’t do the story justice but still good

Easy to listen to

I enjoyed the story l...the only thing that bugged me was the 'male/female's voices the actors out on. I would have ratherwd consistency with them rather than each narrator putting on the other voice during their chapters. I also found the FMC wa splayed a little too whiny but overall I enjoy it

not bad

Agree with I think it was part story part narration, but the FLC was made out to be so weak and I found this irritating. Also the other female characters (who I thought were supported to be strong women i.e. part of the devils were also made out o sound weak by the male narrator. Not sure if it’s just an inability for men to do more high pitched voices, but it detracted from the story.

Annoyed at how weak the FLC was made out to be.

Not an issue with the performance, but the story itself was very frustrating. Specifically the FMC

Great male voice

This book is great and I’m excited for the second one. The male voice actor as male characters is fantastic BUT as the female character it is soo cringey and whiny. It’s the kind of voice guys use when mocking women, scratchy, wining and grating. I think it’s because he is trying to be high pitched, honestly it would be better if he just did the same performance an octave lower.

Great, but males female character is grating.
