Story
The friendship starts with a letter...from aspiring writer Sarah to blunt but witty journalist Helen, complaining about Helen's most recent book review. And there begins a correspondence that blossoms into a friendship which spans over two decades. As the years pass, the women exchange details of loves lost and found, of family joys and upheavals. Sarah's letters filled with thoughts on her outwardly perfect marriage and her aching desire for children, and Helen's on the struggle of raising her young daughter alone.

Story
The year 1871. Adelaide Greaves and her young son have found sanctuary in the Australian town of Maiden's Creek, where she works as a postmistress. The rough Victorian goldmining settlement is a hard place for a woman - especially as the other women in town don't know what to make of her - but through force of will and sheer necessity, Adelaide carves out a role. But her past is coming to find her, and the embittered and scarred Confederate soldier Caleb Hunt, in town in search of gold and not without a dark past of his own, might be the only one who can help.

Katie Collins has barely ever left her tiny Irish village of Ennisbawn. Why would she? With its tightknit community, friendly local pub, surrounded by glistening lakes and perfectly mysterious forests, it’s a place of peaceful beauty. Or it was peaceful. Until Callum Dempsey turned up. Part of a hotshot (and, Katie has to admit, hot is annoyingly apt for him...) development team with zero eye for beauty or charm, he’s not only building a hideous hotel just outside the village, he’s also just announced a plan to knock down Ennisbawn’s only remaining pub.

Will Treasure This Story Always
Never compare the movie to the real story. The movie was a bastardisation of such a brilliant story...extremely bad scriptwriting. I read this book as a teen and loved it then. This time, I have delved deeper into each character and found treasure. And Maeve Binchy knew how to write a strong story on so many levels and express the complexities of the human heart from her own backyard. Brilliant

Good read/listen
I enjoyed the characters. although I found the transitions back and forth between them a bit irritating. I felt the story did go on a little long and could probably have finished a third earlier. The narrator was perfect, very easy to listen to and told the story well. This is my first Maeve Binchy book and probably won't be my last.

Circle of Friends
Many years since I have read a Maeve Binchy book. As I was unwell an audio book was perfect for me. The style of the book was also perfect and I enjoyed it very much. I will certainly choose another title very soon. The story was convincing and the people in it also.

A heart-warming tale for everyone
I love Maeve Binchy, but Circle of Friends is one of her loveliest novels. It harks back to the lost Ireland of the 1950s, where it's an amazing thing for a country girl to go to university and Dublin is regarded as the danger zone for moral purity! The cast of characters is varied, vivid and always interesting, from the quick-tempered orphan Eve to the self-doubting only child Benny, from Benny's loving but suffocating parents to the wise Mother Francis who is determined to get Eve the future she deserves. It's a story about self-acceptance as much as it is about friendship and love -- Benny struggles to find her place as both dutiful daughter and independent educated woman; Eve has to lay her unhappy past to rest in order to build herself a life. As with all Maeve's novels, there is tragedy and sorrow as well as laughter and fun. This is a great listen; please enjoy.
