Publisher's Summary

Is my ordinary, everyday life actually significant? Is it okay to be fulfilled by the simple acts of raising kids, working in an office, and cooking chicken for dinner?

It's been said "life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the number of moments that take our breath away". The pressure of that can be staggering as we spend our days looking for that big thing that promises to take our breath away. Meanwhile, we lose sight of the small significance of fully living with every breath we take.

Melanie Shankle, New York Times best-selling author and writer at The Big Mama Blog, tackles these questions head-on in her fourth book, Church of the Small Things. Easygoing and relatable, she speaks directly to the heart of women of all ages who are longing to find significance and meaning in the normal, sometimes mundane world of driving carpool to soccer practice, attending class on their college campus, cooking meals for their family, or taking care of a sick loved one.

The million little pieces that make a life aren't necessarily glamorous or far-reaching. But God uses some of the smallest, most ordinary acts of faithfulness - and sometimes they look a whole lot like packing lunch.

Through humorous stories told in her signature style, full of Frito pie, best friends, the love of her Me-Ma and Pa-Pa, the unexpected grace that comes when we quit trying to measure up, and a little of the best TV has to offer, Melanie helps women embrace what it means to live a simple yet incredibly meaningful life and how to find all the beauty and laughter that lies right beneath the surface of every moment.

Fantastic performance, great story

I’d just like to say that I love this book so much that I might buy the paper version now also (I listened to it on Audible). It was very easy to listen to, I adore Melanie Shankle and absolutely love the way she narrates her books! After reading quite a few of the less than 5 star reviews, I disagree with most all of them. Sure, she repeats a couple references or pets of stories but it’s definitely not to the point of being annoying and doesn’t make you think “well I’ve heard this before so I’m going to skip it” like some books might. I definitely teared up through multiple parts, especially about her friend with cancer, but there are even more hilarious parts that I laughed at. I highly recommend this for anyone wanting a light and humorous book that also has depth and feeling to it.

so funny! So poignant!

I'm a 40 something married woman with a daughter who is a tween becoming a teen. I grew up in a 1980s making bad fashion choices, debating the merits of bangs, wanting to be Olivia Newton John, attempting to figure out why my parents divorced, grieving a beloved pet and so many more relatable incidents too!
Melanie remembered all those 'little things' that shaped my life and continue to define daily struggles and joys. What a delightful read!

Laughing, crying and head nodding!

Love it, and to have Melanie narrated it makes it even better. I laughed, cried and shook my head in agreement until I thought I might have whiplash. She remind you to stop and appreciate the right now, the small, not just the big parts, and perhaps even the seemingly insignificant parts of your life. Cherish each opportunity, experience and the people that you do life with. Thank you, Melanie

Loved this book!

My favorite part was the stories about their dogs. It so well described the feelings we have about our pets. It was sweet, funny, and tear-jerking.
