About this listen

Matthew, they thought, was just going through a phase of talking to himself. And, like many parents, they waited for him to get over it, but it started to get worse. Mathew's conversations with himself grew more and more intense—it was like listening to one end of a telephone conversation while someone argued, cajoled and reasoned with another person you couldn't hear. Then Matthew started doing things he couldn't do before, like counting in binary-code mathematics. So he told them about Chocky—the person who lived in his head.

Story was fairly interesting but the ending was unexpectedly emotional! Narrator was great too.

Loved the ending!

I’m a big fan of John Wyndham’s work. This was a lot less eventful than many of his other books, but an interesting listen nonetheless. The narration was perfect for this story. Thanks!

Thought provoking

John Wyndham's books were largely written in the late 1950s and early 60s, which was the same period as my childhood. The Midwich Cuckoos and the Day of the Triffids where my first encounter with science fiction and sparked a love for the genre which endures to this day.

Standing the test of time.

This author has a particular way of bringing social issues and social questions to science fiction. His style is clear and easy to listen to. It speaks of a particular period in English fiction, writing, post-war, the beginning of many new inventions and possibilities.

A great mid-century science fiction novel. Very believable characters and beautifully written drama and dialogue.

Well read and a good story

I fondly remember this title from my childhood. Sadly it did not stand up to the test of time. The plot isn't exactly how I remembered it, it seemed much more adult to me, and somewhat stilted and drawn out alot of the time. Sad that. Maybe I'd played it up in my mind. The narration was excellent, but annoyingly monotone so much of the time, however this was down to the content and it was driver by the characters, not by the performance.

I found this incredibly tedious both in story line and narration. the narration was clipped which I found irritating. The story, of which there was none, only became vaguely interesting in the last chapter. Predictable.
