Fifteen-year-old Laura lives apart from her family for the first time, teaching school in a claim shanty 12 miles from home. She is very homesick but keeps at it so that she can help pay for her sister Mary's tuition at the college for the blind. During school vacations Laura has fun with her singing lessons, going on sleigh rides, and, best of all, helping Almanzo Wilder drive his new buggy. Friendship soon turns to love for Laura and Almanzo in the romantic conclusion of this Little House book.

This is the second Little House audio book I've listened to. Not sure if I really like the narrator or not. She has a rather husky sounding voice (like a smoker). Also has an unusual dialect. The one thing that I especially had a difficult time with is the way she pronounced Almanzo. Nothing like the tv show pronunciation, although I assume that's deliberate. I usually prefer reading but the audio version came in handy to listen during work hours at my desk and listening late at night when I couldn't sleep. Will probably get the next audio book in this series, but I wish it had a different narrator.
Such a great performance of such a wonderful story. Highly recommend this book to people of all ages.
The audio is well done. Great modulation and emphasis at right parts. Only the best for this author.
Our family listened with joy to this book narrated by amazingly talented Cherry Jones who again brought this sweet real story to life for our family. The Ingalls and the Wilders were real families and we feel privileged they shared their stories with us thru the eyes of Laura Ingalls Wilder. God bless them and each generation that reads this series. This series filled us with a renewed hope and joy for life, love, marriage, children, and on and on.
I just love the Little House Series. Mrs. Wilder's writing is superb. She has such a way of drawing you in to her world. Audible20bookreview
I loved the story! But the reader mispronounces many words, names, etc. It's truly aggravating and a source of constant irritation.
These Happy Golden Years for decades was the final book in the Little House series. I wore out the library editions of the series and would have loved to have had this audio version . The narrator , Cherry Jones, is just perfect for the role of 15 year old Laura and her sisters and friends. She even does a credible male voice as Pa and Alonzo. Her expression is excellent and I could listen to her over and over. And so I did!

the performance of this story is what makes me want to listen to these amazing stories by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I will certainly listen to more stories performed by Cherry Jones in the future!!

This series may be libertarian propaganda, but by [monotheistic, white, ethnocentric Christian] god, it's good stuff, and if you were raised on it (or raised yourself on it, as some of us children of latter-day swinging hippies did), it's pure auditory comfort food. Highlights of this, the last truly finished and polished volume in the series, include Laura's first away-from-home job teaching school, the Ingalls family beginning to prosper, the return (and near victory) of evil little Nellie Olson, the tornado, sleighing parties, lots and lots of pretty and high-spirited horses (I was never one of those horsey girls, but even I find these entrancing), and Laura's shock as she looks in the mirror one day and sees a grown woman. It's also in this volume that Laura's ambivalence about marriage is displayed, both in her reply to Almanzo's proposal ("it would depend on the ring") and her curious answer when Ma accuses her of agreeing to marry Almanzo for his horses ("I guess I couldn't have one without the other").
The fiddle music 🎶 and singing are unexpected bonuses in this series. Cherry Jones is a GREAT narrator of the material, even though her singing is not always on key (the singing school chapter alone has sections that would make a dog howl). Grade: A big sentimental hand-sewn A.
