Story
Beginning in January 1692, Salem Village in colonial Massachusetts witnessed the largest and most lethal outbreak of witchcraft in early America. Villagers - mainly young women - suffered from unseen torments that caused them to writhe, shriek, and contort their bodies, complaining of pins stuck into their flesh and of being haunted by specters. Believing that they suffered from assaults by an invisible spirit, the community began a hunt to track down those responsible for the demonic work.

Publisher's Summary
A detailed account of one of the strangest and most shocking episodes in American history, written by the author of "The Lottery".
Stories of magic, superstition, and witchcraft were strictly forbidden in the little town of Salem Village. But a group of young girls ignored those rules, spellbound by the tales told by a woman named Tituba. When questioned about their activities, the terrified girls set off a whirlwind of controversy as they accused townsperson after townsperson of being witches. Author Shirley Jackson examines in careful detail this horrifying true story of accusations, trials, and executions that shook a community to its foundations.

Well constructed
The story flows well and conveys a strong sense of how this hysteria could unfold and transform into a full blown moral panic. Terrifying really and the author captures that tone well. Definitely worth listening to.

Truth is stranger than fiction
It's terrifying that, knowing what happened in these events, we're still telling horror stories about witches, rather than witch hunters. I came as a Shirley Jackson fan and her writing is of course superb. It's a pleasure to be able to read about such an interesting subject from one of the best writers of all time.
