Classic Australian
A fun story (on the whole) brilliantly narrated. A look 100 years on from European settlement in Australia. The attitudes, social rules and standards. Regardless, the book stands the test of time.

Australian Classic
Adore the story grew up with it. However disappointed with the narration. unable to finish it.
When Judy dies surrounded by all the children in the outback brings me to tears. Father who was once played by Leonard Thiele , Is really a deep compassionate man wanting control of his large boisterous brood. This is a great story for all ages.

Australian classic: blended family and patriarchy
I joined Audible to read this book. Unable to source a hard copy, I went with technology expecting to be disappointed. I was not. The vintage intonations of the narrator stood the era and story in good stead. The author's unusual style of first person narration outside of the story line absolutely set this apart as a classic early Australian piece. Along with the window into an early blended family on the cusp of deconstructing Edwardian familial norms, I also loved the inclusion of Aboriginal wisdom and work integration as an alternative to colonial patriarchy. The sickness and death scenes were sad yet character building for the other children.....no wonder this is on the classics list. A must to read on two levels: 1) it provides a gaze into the development of an early Australian family - harshness even for the middle class, and 2) it is on the Australian classics list.
