Publisher's Summary

The international best-selling Ranger's Apprentice series turns up the tension in John Flanagan's latest epic of battles and bravery. Halt's Peril ups the ante and doesn’t guarantee the survival of all the heroes!

The renegade outlaw group known as the Outsiders may have been chased from Clonmel, but not before killing Halt's only brother. Now Rangers Halt and Will, along with the young warrior Horace, are in pursuit. The Outsiders have done an effective job of dividing the kingdom into factions and are looking to overtake Araluen. It will take every bit of skill and cunning for the Rangers to survive. Some may not be so lucky.

best in the series

slight spoilers.

this is the best RA book in the series from the pacing and villains to the hilarious character interactions.

the pacing is slow and foreboding and really provides a sense of dread and passing time when halt is in peril. the incremental pace of the plot somehow makes a single genovesan arrow seem more threatening than the entire temujai army from a few books ago. and that’s another thing; the genovesans are so unbelivably scary. it really feels like the gang are facing two rangers of their own skill, with slight differences. and these differences are significant and heavily punish the main cast whenever they forget to account for them; bacari switching his knife hands, the poisoned quarrel tip, the ambushing tactics… all super intimidating and integral to the plot. furthermore, the differences between the genovesans and rangers are the very things that lead to the rangers coming out on top. the rangers’ skills: tracking, cartography, teamwork, quick thinking etc. are instrumental in finally overcoming the genovesans. it truely sends the message that you should play to your strengths when trying to overcome adversity and that there is no substitute for quick wit and clever thinking.

another thing that i really enjoyed in this book were the character interactions. horace is so fucking funny the entire time; he just trolls will and halt because he’s “getting back at them” (this, i find is hysterical). will for his part trolls horace back and comes up with some truely clever one liners “that’s where we get a good knight’s sleep from”. and of course halt is still the cantankerous, hard edged old man we come to expect, but you can tell he cares for the younger men in his team. he’s also super irate and doesn’t take kindly to being made fun of (something the others gleefully exploit). all this being said, there’s never any tonal whiplash; the characters know when to be serious and when to be goofy and it makes for a very entertaining, varied read. the serious versions of the characters are also quite well written. halt is an absolute menace when he’s doing his job; that scene at the start of the book with the pirate was top tier halt, and it was very satisfying. will is less scary than halt - less outwardly threatening to his enemies but i daresay he’s more creative in a pinch. his ability to improvise is unparalleled and it’s very fun reading about his antics. horace doesn’t get much to do here unfortunately, but that’s because most of the attention was on him in the previous book. in any case, the few times he does get to be serious, he’s extremely competent as usual, and in this book, he shows a compassionate side when at halt’s bedside. furthermore, horace has a moment where you can see all the characterisation from the past few stories; a moment where he is so cold and calculating, you can see the rangers’ influence on him (when he injects bacari with the venom).

once more, william zappa is the goat. i love his voice(s) and there were really no complaints this time (other than the fact that perhaps halt’s irish/hibernian accent at the end was a bit too overzealous).
