Publisher's Summary

Emily Starr had never known what it was to be lonely - until her beloved father died. In this, the first of the Emily novels, young Emily is orphaned and goes to live with her mother's snobbish relatives at New Moon Farm. Sure that she'll never be happy there, Emily endures her stern Aunt Elizabeth and malicious classmates by holding her head high and using her quick wit.

But things begin to change as Emily makes several new friends. There is Teddy, who does marvelous drawings; Perry, who has sailed all over the world with his father and has never been to school; and Ilse, a tomboy with a blazing temper. Amazingly, Emily finds New Moon Farm beautiful and fascinating. With new friends and adventures, Emily might someday think of herself as Emily of New Moon.

Great to reread as an adult.

This book has a very different flavour to the Anne books. In many ways it has a darker undertone - though this is not something I remember noticing when I read it as a child - which I think is mainly because the characters are more complex, having a greater mix of good characteristics and great failings, and often scarred in some way. And I think it would probably be fair to say that some of them appear to have no redeeming qualities. This is not a negative. In fact, I think I found this book more satisfying to read as an adult than the Anne books - it certainly lead me to ponder on human nature and in many ways felt a more accurate representation of the world in which I live. So it often provoked deep thoughts, but at the same time I was still able to just delight in and enjoy the story.

I have listened to quite a number of L M Montgomery books that are narrated by Susan O’Malley. I love listening to her voice, and she seems just the right person to read these stories.
