About this listen

Guy Gavriel Kay, best-selling author of the groundbreaking novels Under Heaven and River of Stars, once again visits a world that evokes one that existed in our own past, this time the tumultuous period of Renaissance Europe - a world on the verge of war, where ordinary lives play out in the grand scheme of kingdoms colliding.

From the small coastal town of Senjan, notorious for its pirates, a young woman sets out to find vengeance for her lost family. That same spring, from the wealthy city-state of Seressa, famous for its canals and lagoon, come two very different people: a young artist traveling to the dangerous East to paint the Grand Khalif at his request - and possibly to do more - and a beautiful oman posing as a doctor's wife in her role of a spy.

The trading ship that carries them is commanded by the clever younger son of a merchant family with ambivalence about the life he's been born to live. And farther east a boy trains to become a soldier in the elite infantry of the khalif, to win glory in the war everyone knows is coming. As these lives entwine, their fates - and those of many others - will hang in the balance when the khalif sends out his massive army to take the great fortress that is the gateway to the Western world....

I just didn’t feel as connected to the characters compared to Lion’s of Al’Rassan. I still enjoyed the story though, and as always with GGK, exceptionally well written.

Couldn’t connect with the characters as much as Lions of Al’Rassan but still enjoyed it

Guy Gavriel Kay is one of the best fantasy writers I’ve read. It’s reads more like amazing historical fiction with fantasy elements. Highly, highly recommended.
The guy here who gave it one star needs their head examined because it’s full of marleys.

Amazing world building

Gosh, this book has some beautiful writing - take chapter 12 or 13 for example wherever the author writes about the seasons and death. Amazing. I had to go back and listen to some paragraphs because they were so wonderfully written. And Simon Vance performs everything wonderfully. He could read me the news every morning and it would be masterful. Good characters - wrapped up beautifully. Worth a read/listen.

Beautifully written and narrated

Guy Gavriel Kay writes with such lyricism, sketches such rich characters, casts them over wide vistas of time and place. This book is no exception with poignant echoes of his other books in this universe. Beautifully read, it is a true joy to listen to.

Such a wonderful tale

Gave up. It is poorly written and too much information that was irrelevant and distracting . The author talks at you in such a clumsy manner that you just lose interest. .

Bored me to death. .
