Quando uno nasce, non sa chi è. Se non c'è nessuno che glielo dice, la vita diventa una bella complicazione.
Lei, per esempio, non sapeva chi era, perché quando era nata, la notte di Natale, rotolando giù dal camion di Jack il camionista, si era ritrovata completamente sola e aveva scambiato per sua madre una pantofola di pelo. Una calda pantofola accogliente, dentro la quale si era accoccolata sognando di non essere ancora nata.
In fondo, era contenta di avere questa mamma. E tutto sarebbe rimasto per sempre così, se non avesse avuto il desiderio di conoscere il mondo e sulla sua strada non avesse continuamente incontrato qualcuno che le chiedeva: "Che animale sei?"
