Publisher's Summary

A leading conservative intellectual defends charter schools against the teachers' unions, politicians, and liberal educators who threaten to dismantle their success.

The black-white educational achievement gap - so much discussed for so many years - has already been closed by black students attending New York City's charter schools. This might be expected to be welcome news. But it has been very unwelcome news in traditional public schools whose students are transferring to charter schools. A backlash against charter schools has been led by teachers unions, politicians, and others - not only in New York, but across the country. If those attacks succeed, the biggest losers will be minority youngsters for whom a quality education is their biggest chance for a better life.

Another winner from Thomas Sowell!

Dr. Thomas Sowell whose 90th birthday was yesterday (June 30, 2020) continues to work and publish outstanding books. Audio is not the ideal format for Charter Schools and Their Enemies but with the downloadable 96 page PDF file of charts it works well enough. Do not be misled by the 4.5 hour length of the book because it takes about 12 hours to get through it if one follows the audio while studying the charts in the PDF file. The quality of the charts is exceptionally good.

In the comparison between charter schools and their enemies the enemies lose big time because they are public school teacher's unions and the politicians they buy. Most charter schools get better results than the best of public schools. Most of the comparisons Dr. Sowell makes are of NYC charter schools with the traditional public schools in the same building. Results are based on standard tests in math and English. But the book contains much additional commentary relating to the author's other observations and philosophy.

Anything that Thomas Sowell writes is worth a lot of attention. Although he has a PhD in economics his ability to explain in words all can understand is exceptional.

More now than ever

If you want to save the country, support charter schools. Dr. Sowell, American treasure, makes the case. Even if you don’t have kids, it is important that we have a well educated citizenry. Parents need and want a choice.

A must read for anyone interested in education

In classic Thomas Sowell fashion, this book leaves no doubt in what the author explains. All his data is available and his conclusions very sound. It would be quite the feat for anyone to rebut him on his claims without using a bit of sophistry. I highly recommend this one as education is such an important part of the modern world.

Everyone should read!

A bit statistics heavy in chapter 2, but solid read. This is a well reasearched pro-charter arguement.

Democrats stand in way of Charter schools

Excellent discussion of all the issues in offering quality education to minorities. First part is a little heavy in the numbers, but lays the groundwork for the rest of the book. Clearly demonstrates how Democrat policies and the teachers union are the culprits in our failure to provide a quality education to disadvantaged children. Thomas Sowell has been writing for over 50 years about race, inequality and what the solutions are.

Sowell does it again.

A fantastic explanation of the way government (public) schools inhibit charter schools from providing a quality education to a larger portion of children. Teachers unions among other groups show that their primary interest is not in the education of children but those who they represent. A truly terrible situation for a large number of school districts and families.

Well Written Explanation

Sowell does it again with an amazing explanation on the relationship of teacher unions and the politicians who are supported by them to the anguish of charter schools.

An excellent look into education.

Although this book had much in the way of facts and figures, it really broke down how charter schools are being diminished even when they are showing the ability to level the playing field of so many underprivileged children,

Thomas Sowell its just an amazing human being

Sowell it's the best teacher I've ever have. He is both a good scientist and a good science communicator (teacher). He changed my life. His book basic economics change the way I see the world.

This book it REALLY IMPORTANT. I myself live in Bulgaria. Here the education its really bad, and we don't have charter school. But this book mafe me thi k about to research the politics of it and hoe they can be created legaly here to. The decentralised form of teaching its really effective. In my case i have learn si much from audiobooks, that I never learn in the centrally controlled government schools.

If you are a parent read ir listen this book.

And fir gid sake defund the f. teachers unions they're a cancer. Ot make a parents unin, ir students union. Teachers unions are just acting evil even with good intentions.
