About this listen

Everybody thinks that Charlotte Lucas has no prospects. She is unmarried, plain, poor and reaching a dangerous age. When she stuns the neighbourhood by accepting the proposal of buffoonish clergyman Mr Collins, her best friend Lizzy Bennet is appalled by her decision. Yet this is the only way Charlotte knows how to provide for her future. Her married life will propel her into a new world: not only of duty and longed-for children, but secrets, grief, unexpected love and friendship and a kind of freedom.

Jane Austen cared deeply about the constraints on women in Regency England. This powerful re-imagining takes up where Austen left off in Pride and Prejudice, showing us a woman determined to carve a place for herself in the world. Charlotte offers a fresh, feminist addition to the post-Austen canon, beautifully imagined and brimming with passion and intelligence.

I really appreciate when a writer considers Austen's characters beyond their youth and explores how they might grow and change throughout their lives. I also cannot help but wish that Moffett would write a novella from the perspective of Lizzie's experiences in this novel, as naturally, Charlotte's perspective can only share so much. Moffett writes with a clear love for Austen's works and changes very little from original canon. The audiobook is well produced and the narrator is very engaging. If you're in the mood for JAFF, this text is quality.

I wish I hadn’t relied on reviews when I purchased this book. The narrator was great but it was a convoluted story that followed some strange pathways and methods of exposition, and it seemed to finish abruptly. Unfortunately, to my mind, it didn’t capture the true spirit of Charlotte from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice nor the spirit of Lizzie Bennett, who seemed vastly different. The character of Anne DeBurge was a highlight and I commend the author on that. I also commend her on taking this journey into Jane Austen’s P&P world, but unfortunately this book was not satisfying to me as a JA fan.

Disappointed
